New AT&T Internet Install - What is Needed?

I currently have Comcast cable internet service. I just signed up for AT&T 100 internet. I thought it was self service install but they scheduled a technician to come to my house. Not sure why it cannot be self service? AT&T does not mention what the technician needs to do? Do they need access to a phone line? My current coaxial line that I use for Comcast? Any help any of you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you don't meet the requirements for a Customer Self Install detailed above, you'll need a tech for a full install. You'll need bonded pair service (2 pairs of wire needed, instead of a single pair) for Internet 100. This requires 2-3 hours of tech work for installing new jumper(s) at the crossbox, making connections at the terminal (aerial or ground level), updating the NID on the outside of your residence (or installing a new one), inspecting and/or installing a Cat5e line and wall jack to where the gateway will be installed in the home. The tech will need access to the inside of your residence during this.

Unless AT&T can confirm that there has been AT&T service at your address previously, they have to send a tech.

@skeeterintexas Good to know. I do not think AT&T internet service has been at this address before. Do they connect via coaxial cable or over the phone line?

AT&T internet uses their existing copper network ("telephone line") to your residence, then will run CAT5e ethernet cabling from the outside (NID) to your gateway. They won't use your existing coax.

glad they will be using the copper network and not coax. still using my comcast coax internet so i can compare it to AT&T and see if it will be faster and better. if its not, will cancel within the 14 day grace period and return the gateway to AT&T

When I typed in my address to put in my order, the only option was Internet 50. I didn't see any other lower or higher options. Good to know about the the $99 I paid for install is not refundable during the 14 day period if the internet experience with AT&T is not better than my current Comcast service. Thanks for the help!

When I have tested over a 24hr period, I am showing an average download of 8.18 Mbps , upload of 3.63 Mbps, and ping of 14ms using Comcast
