dsl network

I recently changed from Hughes DSL to AT&T DSL at my office. The Hughes network had a separate modem & router. I disconnected the modem & installed the At&T Modem/router combined unit. It was working fine but I get periodic slow internet, very slow. I'm wondering if the Hughes router is conflicting with the At&T router. Should I disconnect the Hughes router and put a network switch there instead? I am looking for the easiest option. I left the Hughes router there so I could get more network connections.
