YouTube buffering, video stops repeatedly

ATT Uverse; 2.4ghz; 35 to 40 mbps download; direct wired connection to TV; Setting : signal strength - very good; no issues

I watch YouTube between 11:00 to 12:00pm.

Streaming Videos repeatedly interrupted by buffering ; spinning wheel; have to find something else to watch until YouTube connection is back on ; YouTube blames internet connection

Streaming Netflix Movies seldom interrupted

Anyone else have buffering issues on YouTube?

Any suggestions to fix the problem?

Hi @jhearcht2, we are happy to help with your YouTube video concerns.

We want to share a few things with you that will improve your streaming experience.

In some instances, the servers the content is on can be an issue.

  • For example, some videos on YouTube may stream fine while others take time to load.
  • Also, some streaming services like Netflix may stream great while another streaming service may not.
  • This is an item beyond AT&T's control. Test your speeds, if they are with testing parameters, this issue may lie with that streaming service.
  • If you plan is not meeting the plan requirements, check out the Improve Slow Speed section of Wi-Fi Troubleshooting Hub.

Let us know it these tips help.

ATT is pointing the finger of blame at YouTube, which is a free service, and beyond my control

YouTube Help points the finger at my internet provider, which is AT&T. And I'm paying for that service, so I should have some leverage there.

Most of the Google search items say something like this :  "The reason for your slow YouTube experience is most likely your Internet connection."

My measured download speed should be plenty for streaming, so it's probably not a speed issue --- unless ATT is throttling the speed during my viewing hour.

However streaming Netfix movies usually play without buffering. Does YouTube require more thru-put than Netflix? Does the Uverse router work differently for YouTube videos??

I'd appreciate some information more useful than FAQ>

Hi @jhearcht2, you may require higher speeds if you watch several streams and use third-party apps, surf the internet, or stream in 4K at the same time.

Hope this will help.

I don't know what speed I'm subscribed for, but the measured speed is 35 to 40mbps.

Being single, I use only one stream at a time. I don't use High Def for streaming.  After I exit YouTube, due to buffering, I check Uverse Settings on the TV, and it says "network speed is 2.4ghz", and signal strength is "very good"and "no issues".

When I watch YouTube on my computer, connected to the same Uverse router, I don't get repeated buffering. But I normally watch YouTube on my TV, which is cable connected to the Uverse router. Movies typically stream without buffering. So there's something in the system that causes YouTube to repeatedly interrupt videos with a spinning wheel. Any ideas why only YouTube is affected?

We understand that you're still having trouble with buffering @jhearcht2.

  • Have you tried rebooting your gateway to refresh your network?
  • Just to make sure we understand you correctly, this only happens with YouTube?

Restart your Wi-Fi gateway or modem

  1. Sign in to Smart Home Manager and select Network.
  2. Scroll to and select Home Network Hardware.
  3. Select Wi-Fi Gateway and then Restart.
  4. Select RESTART again

Please try rebooting your router then try streaming and let us know what happens.

Yes. What is it about YouTube that makes it buffer so often? Google search finds lots of complaints, but few real solutions.

For my local problem, I might have to "reboot the router" every night . . . if that's the only fix.

@jhearcht2, we understand your concerns.

  • You stated that YouTube is the only service that you are having an issue of buffering.
  • Also, when you watch YouTube on your computer, connected to the same U-verse router, you don't get repeated buffering only on your TV device.
  • Are you using DSL, Fixed Wireless or Fiber internet subscription?

If you are using a Fixed Wireless internet you must know:

  • Even though you have purchased a specific service speed and the AT&T network is highly reliable, it is important to note that the websites you interact with may not provide their services at the same speeds
  • AT&T offers many internet service options, each of which has a different service capability speed range.

If you have any additional concerns, please feel free to reach out to us.

"Are you using DSL, Fixed Wireless or Fiber internet subscription?"   Lafayette, AT&T Community Specialist

I assume the service is Fiber Internet U-verse. So the internet speed (35 to 40mbps) should not be a problem. But YouTube, stops repeatedly, and says the internet connection is interrupted. They ask me to check with my provider. I guessed that YouTube's overloaded servers may the problem. But I don't know how they could stay in business with such unreliable service.

However, since the interrupted videos are not a problem on my PC computer on the same AT&T service, I suspect that the glitch could be in the connection to the TV. But, other streaming services, such as Netflix do not stop & buffer several times in an hour. Should I ask for a service rep to check it out?

Same problem here. My ATT Gateway constantly reboots only while streaming YouTube. Every other streaming service works fine. It’s maddening.

I’m having the same problem with AT&T 5G. I have the unlimited and more

plan. It says SD streaming only (1.5 mbps) my 5G speed test was at 183mbps. I can stream Netflix and Amazon video just fine in HD. Why is YouTube different? If I “upgrade” to unlimited elite it says HD streaming up to 1080p.   So if I spend $7.50 more to upgrade will I be able to select 1080p on YouTube app and watch videos without buffering or stuttering? Thanks
