Why isn’t port forwarding available for hotspot devices?

Why isnt port fowarding avaiable for hotspot deivces? I mean I don't see the point of having that disabled. I mean I wouldn't mind paying a few extra bucks a month to have port fowarding enabled. And if your thinking: "Its to help protect our users from malware" well if users knew what they are doing and know what port fowarding is I dont see that as a threat. I've contacted through ATT through twitter. I've done a chat session that they directed me 5-6 times. Then they told me to call a number but it wont let me get past the first number. Currently a VPN is the only way to get around this. But is there a Valid reason why port fowarding isnt a option. And if verizon does it why cant AT&T?

Hey @MCB123,

We're happy to answer your question!

We have port forwarding disabled on most hotspot devices for network security purposes. However, port forwarding is available on the Nighthawk LTE Mobile Hotspot Router with universal plug and play. You should check it out!

If you have any other questions about this, let us know.

Thanks for reaching out!

Then why isn’t port forwarding available on the NETGEAR lb1120? Why isn’t that one whitelisted?

@MCB123

As I stated, we don't allow port forwarding on all hotspot devices for the purposes of network security.

network security?

What does network security have to do with a hotspot that is made for your tower? Especially high brand ones like NetGear. I mean I could understand off brand hotspots but why is one specific hotspot only whitelisted? Like what’s special about it?

Seasons Greetings, @MCB123! Thanks so much for asking again.

Port Forwarding is available on two advanced AT&T Wireless internet devices - the MR1100 (LTE), & MR2100 (5G). Port Forwarding requires a secure login, UPnP capabilities & the NETGEAR Mobile app.

Your device, like most older models - is not UPnP capable, not as secure, with no app support. We see that as a threat so you can see why the MR1100 so special.

Since you 'wouldn't mind paying ... to have Port Forwarding', tonight is great time to get the device you want, and the speed you need. You can place an order online, and have it activated by this eve. Check the link above to get started, and, if you will - post again once your order is complete. Thanks!

Happy New Year

So if I get the mr1100 I can do port fowarding and things for like the nintendo switch I can get a NAT type of A and Open Nat on my Xbox one. Am I able to plug the mr1100 into a routher via ethernet and just put the router in the DMZ and do the port fowarding configuration on the router? Is there unlimited port fowarding?

Hello, @MCB123,

Thank you for the question. The Nighthawk is a mobile router so it connects to wireless data. Here's more information on the Netgear Nighthawk.

Have a happy New Year's!

Well I would of got that hotspot however you don't have a unlimited plan for it. And 15 GB would go away in like 1-2 days. Not able to put a unlimited plan sim card on the hotspot. Not cool.

Also I realized something, on the netgear lb1120 I don't know what you mean by not as secure, On page 18 of the lb1120 manual it says: While the password that you enter is unique to your modem and is secure, we recommend that you change it to a password that you want to use. For more information, see Change the Modem Password on page 38. Not to mention it can use IPV6.

UPnp, Well a lot of time you just plug the ethernet port into a router that's capable of UPnp, and if it's just one computer it's connected to what's the point of UPnP if there are no other devices?

And the app is compatible with the lb1120, it's just limited on settings but it has the basic functions.

I'm not trying to be mean or cause a problem, you guys are a really good service. I'm just still confused.

@ATTHelp I purchased a MR1100 device based on this information. I cannot setup port forwarding because ATT is blocking it with their firewall. When I called technical support they said that they will not allow port forwarding without purchasing a dedicated business IP.

Who is correct and how do I get this fixed now that I have purchased a $400 router specifically for this?
