What's involved in installing U-verse internet

I believe that some markets offer customer self install for Internet only or internet + voice, but I don't know if it's still available in all markets or not.  If you are very comfortable with wiring in your house, and you can be present to talk to the outside install technician when they do their portion you an do it (I did my own) but there are some limitations.  First of, you are limited to 12 Mbps max download speed on self-installs, and if you have problems and the technician has ot come back to your house, it is a chargable visit, and will often cost you more than paying the $99 installation fee.

You can purchase your residential gateway (modem/router) if your internetspeed is 12 Mbps or lower, but for higher speeds, I believe that you are required to lease their equipment.  Either way, you need to get one specifically configured for your installation by AT&T, so you will need to purchase it from them.

The installation will require them to come out to your house and do the work ar the NID (box outside your house).  From there, if you pay the installation fee, they will then connect the wires to feed your house, and setup the jack in your house and make sure your conneciton is up and runnig before they leave.  If you do the self install, then you are responsible for your in house wiring, and also connecting your in house wiring to the NID.  If you are not very comfortable doing this, strongly consider paying the installation fee.  I know several people who had the technician instalaltion, and the installation charge was waived, so they got the installation for free.  In my case, I had some issues with the original outside installer telling my wife the wrong information so my connection didn't work, and I had to have a technician back out to correct the errors of the first installer.  When they come out, they will disconnect your current DSL (it can't work on the same wires as your new UVerse).  If you are keeping your POTS (analog telephone) service, they will make sure it is connected and still working for you.  If you are getting U-Verse voice, they will make sure that is connected and working too.

I do have one additional question: When the DSL is disconnected does the U-verse run on the same wiring as the old DSL or does new wiring have to be installed?

The direct answer to your question is a qualified, yes, and no.

Yes, as it uses the same coppor wire connection as your DS: service.

No, in the sense that differant Neighborhood Interface boxes are required for providing U-verse as opposed to DSL.

And of course, you require differant connection equipment to process the differant signals.
