Warning: Your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names and passwords must match
My connection has been really slow lately. When I looked at my wi-fi configuration this shows up at the top
Warning: Your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names and passwords must match to benefit from the enhanced Wi-Fi technology on your gateway.
Your device is equipped with enhanced Wi-Fi technology, known as band steering, that is designed to provide improved in-home Wi-Fi performance by automatically optimizing the connection for each of your in-home Wi-Fi devices. For this technology to work properly and provide you with optimized Wi-Fi performance, the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password for both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi radios in this Wi-Fi Gateway must match.
Creating unique network names and passwords for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz radios will disable the optimization feature and potentially result in degraded in-home Wi-Fi performance.
For more information go to att.com/enhancedwifi
Everything matches so I'm confused as to why I am getting this warning.

I have Spectrum (charter) and am using a router they provided. Both network names are different (each ends in 2g and 5g, respectively) Is this causing my network to have issues? I haven't noticed any connection issues (router installed about 4 mos. ago)

Could try using copy/paste to ensure matching.
A more drastic step would be to factory reset.

Tons of reasons why your internet “can be slow lately. “
The easiest thing to do is power off on your router about once a month by pulled no the plug. This causes updates to automatically come down from your provider.
It can be your provider slowing down, it can be interference on your wireless network, it can be your router (hardware or software) or it can be your device (Hardware or software).
Without knowing your devices or configuration I can’t tell you exactly how to do this.
To figure it out where problems could be, you need to connect a wired device to one of the ports on your router or the internet out port of your modem if you have a separate modem/router. Run a test at Speedtest.net or other such site. Don’t click on and ads or buttons on that site, just the test. You get 2 numbers the speed up and down. The speed down is most likely what you are concerned about. Wired, that is the max you are getting from your provider. It will vary some depending on the traffic and time of day.
Now run the test on your wireless device. The difference is the lost speed from using wireless. It will vary from signal strength caused by distance and interference. Interference can be caused by physical building, another network, CRTs, radios, mwave oven, even a garage door opener.
Get yourseft site survey software, Dell includes one on their laptops or free NetSpot is what I use on my Macbook Air. Open it at your desk or couch (where you usually sit) and look for your SSID, channel and strength. Look at the other networks and the channels they are using.
Move your router around, higher, lower, rotate left n right, on its side and watch what happens to your signal. Consider moving it to a central part of the house or the room you are in the most.
Open your router configuration, with software provided by ISP, manufacturer or by typing its address in your browser. ie 192.168.1.1 or 10.1.1.1 (look at settings > WiFi click the blue info mark and look at “router”.) Your password is probably on the side of your router or is admin, password or blank.
Go into wireless settings n change the channel from auto to something not being used on your site survey screen. For both 2,4 n 5 ghz if you have dual band. Try several and watch the signal quality. Check to make sure your mode is not set to include B devices. These are old devices and will cause your network to run at 10Mbps. Mixed G 54Mbps, N 450Mbps and ac 1300Mbps are ok, especially if your wired out was under 54Mbps down. N and ac is best unless you have G devices.
Look at your routers version of firmware and check for updates.
Too many choices of user devices to go into. Check for OS updates, update drivers for wireless and network cards, replace old 10/100 network cards with 10/100/1000 cards which may include not using the imbedded card in your motherboard and adding a card. Buy newer usb wireless adaptors, wireless network range extenders etc.
Good luck.

I'm getting the same message today.
both the network names and passwords match.
I'm guessing this is a standard warning rather than an error message?
I'm curious is anyone has any more information on this warning.
Thanks

We're here to help provide some insight on band-steering, @NotATechieButITry.
Regarding the error message you're getting about the bands not matching, it's important to know that the details for your network names & passwords are both caps & character sensitive. If there's any difference whatsoever between the credentials used for the two bands, they'll be separated and band-steering will be disabled. If you're 100% sure that the details match however, then the advice @Constructive provided is accurate, and you can ignore the warning entirely.
If the network information is mismatched in any way however and you'd like to re-enable band steering, the easiest way to do so would be by downloading the Smart Home Manager app & following the prompts from there.
With the Smart Home Manager app, you'll be able to manage all of your home network information (including your network names and passwords) so that you can set your internet up the way you want it.
Let us know how this works for you! We look forward to hearing back from you.

Thanks @Constructive and @ATTHelp-
I think I was trying to change too many things at once, so I separated my changes into separate steps, and it seemed to work then.
thanks again-
