Uverse gateway 5268AC - Ethernet connection shuts off when connected to a switch

When I try to plug the Netgear GS208 switch into the 5268AC gateway, the gateway shuts off the Ethernet port.  I can verify that the port is off with a bright orange led on the connection.  Also, I can verify on the 192.168.1.254 site that the wired ethernet port is down.  If I switch ports, the previous one will return to being up, and the new one will be down.  I have two existing connections that are on static IP addresses:  1 for the DVR and 1 for a Cisco AP connection to a remote DVR.

Why is it so difficult to connect a dumb switch into the Uverse gateway?  Is the gateway defective?  Sure seems that way.

Why is it so difficult to connect a dumb switch into the Uverse gateway.

It is recommended you do not connect the att equipment through a unmanaged switch due to the multicast iptv traffic being passed through that switch.  There are threads in these forums about this subject and you may be able to use a GS108E managed switch.

There are threads in these forums where users do want to connect their tv stuff through a switch.  Below is a link to two of them to see what's involved in this process.

Orange LED does not mean it's off.

It means it's formed a 10/100/1000 connection with a device.

A green LED would signify a 10/100 connection.

Simply put, when it's orange the device you have connected has a gigabit network card.

-- Hmmm.  OK then.  Why does the gateway page show that the connected port is down?  Also, if that port is connected then my static addressed DVR and remote DVR will go down.

-- I'll pick one up from Amazon then and report back.

Thanks for your help.
