Max available speed with UVERSE
I just upgraded ATT DSL to Uverse. I've always had 1.5 Mbs and was told it would remain that speed because I'm 11,000' form the office.
When the new Uverse modem was installed, it reports 5.8Mbs coming in. When I called to try to upgrade to higher speed I'm told it's not available. The tech support engineer could not explain to me why the modem has 5.8Mbs in, but cannot provide that to the inside network.
We have only internet and phone, no TV.
Below is a capture of the medem connection.
DSL Line | Line 1 (inner pair) | |
User Rate | 1817 kbs | 380 kbs |
Max User Rate | 5824 kbs | 1065 kbs |
Noise Margin | 7.7 dB | 16.4 dB |
Attenuation | 55.0 dB | 34.3 dB |
Output Power | 16.8 dBm | 1.6 dBm |
Can anyone explain why ATT cannot raise the speed?

Connect a wired device to the router and test again. You'll more than likely see the speeds you're paying for unless there is an issue with the circuit. If your wireless speeds are fluctuating wildly, I recommend buying a good wireless router and use that, or beg att for an AC router.

We are very disappointed with the 1.5mps upload speed. Is there anything that can be done to improve it? We are on Johns Island in SC. Does anyone have a phone number where we can speak with someone in the US?
Thanks.

my thoughts
Ok, I dont get it. coming from an AT&T employee maybe you can answer this for me. You say that these are the plans,
What is the best speed tier your address will support?
If your address will support a higher tier, could move up at a higher monthly cost?
List (Retail, non promotion pricing)
Pro $47, Elite $52, Max $57, Max Plus $62, Max Turbo $72, Power $82, Power Plus $92.
Plus any applicable gateway fee/taxes/etc.
NOW I live in the city ( Toledo Ohio ) and the best Plan that they have here is the Max Plus 18/1 which is the plan that I have but I get nowhere close to 18/1, more like 20 to 50 kbs down and 0.3 up. AT&T has been out numorus times now, replacing equipment , motum, jacks, lines ect in my home and even replaced the line from my home to the neighborhood box, still slow speeds.
now what I dont understand is being that I live in the city why is it that AT&T does not offer any better plans in the CITY? I mean where is this Max Turbo, Power or Power Plus? I can understand if I was in the country way out in nowhere but In the CITY, where everything is excessable? Its bad enough that I dont even come close to the speeds that I pay for now and now I find out that there is other plans with faster speeds and I cant even upgrade in the CITY. Oh did I mention that I live In the CITY, not country, not on an boat or a plane but the CITY. With all the work that AT&T has done with new lines and everything on my home and I still cant even get the speeds that I am paying for, told that I cant upgrade because I have the best plan that they offer now at 18/1 and now I find out that in fact AT&T offers better plans elsewhere just not in my CITY. Thinking that I should of stayed with cable, pay a little more but you get what you pay for and guess what I can upgrade

If the best you have available is the 18/1 plan, then that means you have access to ADSL2+ plans, and not the superior VDSL2. AT&T says that on an 18/1 plan, you should get at least 15 Mbps down. That you're reporting less than 1 Mbps makes me think there are other things at work:
1) How are you testing?
2) Are you using multiple ways of testing? Multiple tests, multiple servers per test?
3) Are you testing against a host with fairly low latency (i.e. nearby)?
4) Are you making sure that you're testing when nothing else is consuming your Internet bandwidth? For example, disconnecting all gear but the PC you're testing on.
5) Are you testing on wireless or wired? If wireless, connect via an Ethernet cable and get a baseline on whether the issue is your wireless connection to the Gateway or between your Gateway and the AT&T network?
