ATT sending packets weirdly
Hey all,
Been having some MAJOR lag spikes in rocket league. Once every game or so. Decided to traceroute my packets and they're not being sent optimally at all. Rocket league's east servers are located roughly in Ashburn, Virginia, after finding the ip address in my game files after playing a match.
Here's where they go:
ATT uses Cogent servers it looks like. I'm not sure necessarily how it all works but it definitely seems like it's sending my info as a tier 3 connection instead of a tier 1 connection, like gaming should be. Just hoping to get a little more insight on how my packets are being sent, and if there's anything I can do to stop lagging. Usually I wouldn't care much but I play collegiately so it is very important to me. (the red line is packet loss)

Hi there, collinj72. We understand that you have a concern with high ping and latency when you are playing your online game. We can help with that.
We do need to correct you on a few things. AT&T does not use Cogent servers. We have our own, which are represented by HOPS 1-8. Anything after those HOPS, is the routing path the data takes to reach to your game.
In order to correct high ping and latency while gaming, we first need to take a look at what your packets are doing. In order to do that, we will need to look inside your router. Before we do that, let's explain what we are looking for.
There are two common terms used in the gaming world. Those terms are:
Both of those terms are not good things. Doxing refers to someone that has discovered a public IP address is able to use that IP address to discover public information about that person or player. DOS Attack refers to when a high amount of data is being sent to a particular IP address. It is also called Flooding.
Let's see if you have any of what is mentioned going on. Follow these simple steps:
If you one mention of "DOS attack" in the list, it may not be a concern, but multiple entries of "DOS attack" is a cause for concern.
If you are affected by a DOS attack, AT&T recommends that you unlug your equipment for at least 24 hours.
If there is anything else that we can do for you, please reach out to us again.
Thank you for reaching out to the AT&T Community Forums.

No DOS attacks in the logs. Anything else I could try?

Thank you for that information, @collinj72.
If possible can you use the command prompt/PowerShell to run a traceroute to the server and share a screenshot of the results here? It seems a tad bit of information is cut off of the one previously provided. Once we have that we can better analyze it and see what we can do to resolve this.
We look forward to hearing from back from you!

Are you running your own router behind the att gateway, @collinj72 ?

From the picture above, that was with a separate router to try using NETGEAR’s Quality of Service feature to see if that would help. The problem occurs both with a separate router and just using ATTs router and modem combo
