5ghz Uverse internet

I have a Motorola NVG589 is it possible to have it in the 5ghz band, with uverse. If it is possible how do I change it and will I be charged for changing the band. I heard it is better on 5 GHz with newer devices than using the 2.4 GHz frequency. Also is there a way to have one network with two ssid s one 2.4 GHz and the other the 5ghz.

It is possible, but only by connecting your own access point or router to the Residential Gateway.  The NVG589 can only have one SSID, and it only operates in the 2.4 GHz band.

5.0 GHz is currently less crowded, but has a shorter range and is poorer at penetrating walls, etc.  If you're in a small apartment with lots of neighbors with 2.4 GHz and fewer with 5.0 GHz, then 5.0 GHz can be a big help.  If you're in a big house with nearest neighors far way, 2.4 GHz is often a better choice.  2.4 GHz is also shared with Cordless phones, some baby monitors and Microwave ovens, so 5.0 GHz does help you avoid those as well.
