The original thread is over 4 years old so I don't know if those answers still hold true.
"hold down the reset button for up to 4 seconds..... but now I am confused if I should remove the DC power plug for 30 seconds"
Both will reboot the gateway. I've done both in the past with the same results.
You might be thinking of a Factory or Hard reboot of the DVR which is different than a Soft reboot. A Factory or Hard reboot of the DVR will erase your recordings.
