Smart Home Manager and WiFi Extender

On my Smart Home Manager app it says:

"We recommend adding an extender.  We'll send it at no cost to you"

then there is a button that says "Get started" at the bottom.

HOWEVER, when I click on the button, nothing happens.  No new page, doesn't populate a separate website or anything.  Quite frustrating.

Has anyone else experienced this or have an work around?  The app is updated.

I believe Att provides this service as a monthly subscription.  You’d be better off buying yourself a proper wifi system and creating your own wifi network.

Hello @danwithwifiextender,

Thanks for reaching out to us! Let's work on a fix and find out what's causing this!

We recommend that you follow the steps below:

Clear the cache and data of the Smart Home Manager app: Go to your phone’s settings, then to the “Apps” or “Application Manager” section. Find the Smart Home Manager app and tap on it. Then, tap on “Storage” and select “Clear cache” and “Clear data”. This will clear any temporary files and data that may be causing the issue.

Uninstall and reinstall the Smart Home Manager app: If clearing the cache and data doesn’t work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Go to your phone’s settings, then to the “Apps” or “Application Manager” section. Find the Smart Home Manager app and tap on it. Then, tap on “Uninstall” and confirm. After the app is uninstalled, go to the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and search for “Smart Home Manager”. Download and install the app again.

If the app still doesn't list the devices, make sure that your device is connected to the same network that as the extenders. If that doesn't work. Let's try syncing. Follow these steps:

We hope this information is helpful, and thanks for reaching out to AT&T Community Forums!

Hi, I tried those steps but even when reinstalling the app, the bug still occurs and nothing else happens when I click on "Get Started".

Any other ideas?

@gr8sho thanks for the input.  what do you mean set up a proper wifi system?  Connecting a router to the actual modem?

@danwithwifiextender  WiFi can and is lame with the AT&T gateways in a lot of cases. Purchase a mesh WiFi router system (router plus a satellite or two), place the gateway in IP passthrough mode and let the new router handle all of the heavy lifting and WiFi duties. What kind of internet service do you have?

@OttoPylot oh boy you are really testing my technical knowledge here.  We have ATT Fiber 500.  I thought for some reason with Fiber, we couldn't set up via our own router.  As such, we are using the provided equipment (modem?) and then a provided WiFi extender.  I own a personal modem (NETGEAR CM600 (24x8) DOCSIS 3.0)  and router (TP-LINK Archer C2300 Dual-Band) but they are not connected to this current set up.

Thoughts?

Hey @danwithwifiextender,

Thank you for writing back to us.

We see that you have already done the uninstallation and reinstallation several times. Thank you for trying that, but it is not working. Let's expand on that. Let's try a few simple troubleshooting steps:

For Android:

       Force Quit the app:

  1. From your device screen, select Settings
  2. Select Apps or Application manager (this may vary by device type).
  3. Select the app from the list and Force stop.

      Clear the app cache:

  1. From your device screen, select Settings.
  2. Select Apps or Application manager (this may vary by device type).
  3. Select the app, then select Clear cache.

For Apple devices, then you do want to try the same things, but the steps are just a bit different. Here is a great IOS App troubleshooting article that will help.

We also recommend you to try the web version of the Smart Home Manager and let us know if the features work properly.

Learn how to setup your Smart Wi-Fi Extender through Smart Home Manager.

Try these things and let us know if they work for you.

Happy to assist!

@danwithwifiextender With AT&T gateways you are required to use their equipment. However, you can use a secondary router and use that to handle all of your routing and WiFi duties. IP Passthrough will basically "disable" the routing and WiFi portion so you can still connect and be verified to AT&T with the gateway part but your routing and WiFi is handled by the secondary router.

You can also just purchase (rent) the AT&T WiFi extender and try that but from what I've heard, they are pretty iffy.  Most folks just go the mesh WiFi route via IP Passthrough. There are any number of really good mesh WiFi Systems available (Netgear, Eero, Google, Ubiquiti, etc). I don't have AT&T internet service so my ISP allows me to use my own equipment (Netgear AX4200 router and a Motorola DOCSIS 3.1 modem). I have two satellites as well that are hard wired back to the router for the backchannel.

Same problem here @danwithwifiextender -- the button to add a free additional extender doesn't do anything. The web version doesn't offer this option. Please post if you get it working somehow.

@danwithwifiextender

Yes, correct. If you already have your own personal router, Ethernet connect it to the gateway and set it to access point mode, then just use its wifi and Ethernet ports.  The gateway will handle routing functions.  You can disable the WiFi in the gateway to avoid complications.  This is how I run things here.
