Remote Desktop Does Not Work When Target is Connected via Ethernet to NVG599

For some reason, when my homeserver is connected via ethernet to my Arris NVG599, I cannot connect to it via Microsoft Remote Desktop from my laptop that is connected via wireless to my Arris NVG599. However, if my homeserver is connected via wireless to my Arris NVG599, I can connect to it via Microsoft Remote Desktop. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be?

I just wanted to follow up I found the issue and it was no fault of the Arris NVG599. What had happened is that when I connected over ethernet, Windows 10 assumed that it was a "public" network which had different firewall permissions a "private" network. Windows 10 assumed that when I connected over wireless, it was a "private" network. That seems backwards to me, but whatever. Sure enough, for "private" networks, remote desktop was granted a firewall exception, but not for "public" networks.

 

So, if I have learned anything, is that when running into this kind of issue, you should first disable the operating systems firewall when troubleshooting. If it works, it is an exception issue, or lack thereof.

Hello @thecodygriffin,

You may have to open the ports on the NVG599 so that the server and your computer can communicate without getting blocked by the firewall.

I am not smart with the NVG599, so i hope someone else will find this topic to help you out.

I appreciate the response, but I have attempted that already. The issue specifically appears to occur when the target computer, my homeserver, is connected to the NVG599 via ethernet. I can remote into it perfectly fine when it is connected over wireless.
