Need help with WiFi configuration

We have numerous problems with our Wifi (slow, smart devices keep getting lost, etc).  We have a model 5288ACFXN U-verse router.  We only have Uverse Internet, not TV. We don't have any problems with wired connections.

I'm hoping to disable the WiFi on our AT&T router and purchase a dedicated WiFi router.

What do we need to do, if anything, on the ATT router, other than disabling the Wifi?  Also, are there any WiFi routers that are known to work well in conjunction with the ATT router to give us better reliability and strength?

If you use your own personal router, which I wholeheartedly support, you shouldn’t need to do anything to the Att gateway other than shutoff its WiFi.  Your router should be set to run in access point mode to have the simplest setup.
