IFWA-40 Port Forwarding Not Working

I bought an IFWA-40 because I needed its router functions. I live rurally enough that we have no wired internet service available, so we've been relying on a couple of ATT Unite Explore hotspots. But I'm having to do more work from home these days, and one critical piece of software I use requires UDP ports 6000 and 6001 be open. I feel like I've tried everything, but the ports remain closed. I'm running a MacBook Pro, by the way.

I've seen a few posts, some from ATT reps, indicating that port forwarding is not supported on the IFWA-40. But I find it hard to believe ATT would sell an ATT device with instructions in the manual explicitly telling exactly how to set up port forwarding if the feature actually doesn't work at all. I know some people have been having similar issues with gaming consoles and NAT3, but this is a straight computer connection via WiFi to the unit and using cellular data.

Is there something I may be missing? Thanks for your help.

Hello, @digdom,

Thanks for reaching out. Port forwarding isn't possible on the IFWA. It doesn't support a static IP.

Have a great week.

Thanks for the reply, James. It's unbelievable to me that AT&T would sell a router with with specific set-up instructions shown in the printed manual when the device can't perform the function at all. I wasted hours online, on the phone being tossed from one rep to another, and messing with it trying to get it to work. But there you go. Now I'll just send this (Edited per community guidelines). back.

Can you please tell me what hotspot router will work with port forwarding? The Netgear Nighthawk perhaps?

Hi, @digdom,

The Nighthawk is the router that is listed as being able to handle port forwarding on wireless internet service. That would be the one to try.

Have a great day.

Encountered the same issue with a device and service purchased in June 2020.  The advertising literature states the function of port forwarding, this is apparently a false statement of the consumer device's capability.

I have been a cell phone customer for years. I typically receive good customer service when I need to call in. However, the tech service for the internet is DEPLORABLE! I just had my modems swapped out for a "free" upgrade to the 1000 plan. The issue is my son's desktop, which is less than a year old, was able to connect to the wifi

at home, no issue. This evening, when he got home from work, our laptops and cells connected to the home wifi, but not his desktop. The tech support, Issac, disconnected me twice. And was VERY accusatory and argumentative. And a suppossed "supervisor" disconnected me as well, without a call back. This was 3 hours trying to resolve an issue!

I was told by Issac that I need to pay for further assistance. Unacceptable! Or his desktop is too far from the new modem. Give me a break! Our cells and laptops were the same distance as his desktop, and we were able to get online via WiFi It's always had connectivity via WiFi

But NOT the desktop. I would like a resolution!

I've wasted well over 3 hours dealing with this issue and still no resolve. If my son was home and not at work, he works nights. I would have had the installer fix it when he was here at noon on Thursday

I am absolutely NOT feeling like a valued customer with the internet section of ATT Very sad!

Yesterday, and $200 later, my son went to Best Buy to purchase an extender.  Which he was told by Best Buy employees that MANY att customers have been having similar issues with this fibre 1000 upgrade.  My son’s desktop is FINALLY able to be connected to the internet.  It does pick up our SSID network.  However, he is now blocked out of some websites that he was previously accessing when we had the old internet modem.  Utterly ridiculous!
