How Can I decrease latency and increase download speeds and network speed?

Where I live, I don't have the greatest Internet, games either have horrible input lag or tons of latency, and I have an average 1 mbps download speeds. What settings could I put on my router to solve these issues?

Hi @FoiledAgain, we understand the importance of having a high speed internet. Let's get the help you need.

The speed you get on devices connected to your network can vary. The number of devices you connect to Wi-Fi, how you use them, their age and type, and Wi-Fi signal strength all can affect speed.

We recommend that you check your device speed.

Please  follow these steps to improve device speed:

  • Reboot devices regularly to clear system errors.
  • Exit streaming apps after watching videos or listening to music.
  • Set auto-updates on apps, gaming consoles, and PCs to run when your network isn’t busy.
  • Update anti-virus programs, drivers, firmware, and computer and device software.
  • Replace older Wi-Fi devices with newer, faster technology.

For more information, please check out our article on how to optimize your internet speed.

Let us know how it goes!

Thank you,

State what service plan you have there, please.  Also how your gaming device is connected to gateway.

I should point out the following to avoid any more noise. An Ethernet connected device to a factory reset gateway is the best performance you will get.   There are no magic gateway/router settings to make gaming better.   If service to the gateway is not up to par, that will affect usage.  Not uncommon for copper DSL service.  Fixing such issues would require a service call scheduled through Att if probable cause is found.

More info is needed but if the best internet speed availability for your address is 1.5 (Express) then need to consider a different ISP which might include local cable company, WISP using an antenna system normally 4G LTE, FWA product such as ATT AIR or T-Mobile or Verizon 5G Home Internet, or a satellite provider such as HughesNet, ViaSat or StarLink.

For ATT hardwired internet there are multiple platform types which is based upon facilities and distance from those facilities.

Fiber…. 5000, 2000, 1000, 500, 300, 100 … unlimited data

VDSL FTTN… 100, 75, 50, 45, 25 … 1.5T data cap

ADSL2+…. 18, 12, 10, 6, 5, 3, 1.5, .76 … 1.5T data cap

Legacy DSL… 6, 3, 1.5, .76 … 150 G data cap

from cell tower

Fixed Wireless with data cap

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) no data cap
