Fixed Wireless High Packet Loss

We've had AT&T's Fixed Wireless internet service for about 7 months now and haven't had any issues up until this week. But our internet packet loss has been stuck between 40-55% for about 4 days now. Speed tests show our download speed to be ~60 Mbps and upload ~10 Mbps, but the packet loss makes the internet almost unusable. I've tried AT&T's troubleshooting tool several times, checked all of the wires & outdoor antenna, restarted the whole system, and tested devices that are connected directly into the router with no luck. Any suggestions?

All,

We understand some of our Fixed Wireless customers may have experienced intermittent service interruptions, delays or buffering. As of April 14th, we have resolved this issue in all areas and for all customers.

We understand our customers’ frustration and appreciate their patience as we worked through these issues.

Thanks,

Maybe they're talking about internet speed. I noticed a few people posting about their speeds being in the gutter.

The president office lady said nothing about a fix for today... Idk

This is a lie. I still have high packet loss of 32% or higher. They have done nothing to fix this.

You are not alone. I've had Fixed Wireless for about 15 months and it was great up until mid December. I contacted AT&T and they sent out a tech. The only thing the tech did was show me results from AT&T's speed test as if that was useful at all. I'm sorry but I will never believe a speed test that AT&T conducts because there's a conflict of interest in showing us honest test results. The tech was just doing his job so I don't blame him at all.

Tech told me that Fixed Wireless has been in high demand and is overly congested which is the only thing that makes sense. AT&T oversold the service and the shared bandwidth is oversaturated. I'm conflicted about this because while this leads service to often be abysmal for paying customers, more people are able to have an internet service that is preferable to satellite. The problem is that I and many others have no choice but Fixed Wireless or Satellite so AT&T has us over a barrel.

I have had numerous tickets opened. If you do a WinMTR or PingPlotter you will see major packet loss and buffer bloat issues on the AT&T network. I have been unable to get anyone to assist or address it outside of a few wasted dispatches to my house.

Constant disconnects on WoW during peak hours. I am going to look for another service soon.

I also play WoW, or at least try to. Starting last Saturday I've been getting massive packet loss during peak hours. Oddly enough, no other application seems to suffer from packet loss. I have been told by tech support the problem is because I've had the pace 5268ac going on 2 years now and they offered to order me a newer modem. It has been an entire week of trying and failing to get the modem ordered, I've been handed one excuse after another. Once, they were out of stuck so the system automatically cancelled the order, then I was told there was a looping error on my account that auto cancelled the orders, they change their story every time and I have transcripts of all the chats to prove it. If the fault lies with the modem, why is it only during peak hours and only seems to have a negative impact on one single application? I'm rocking a 1000+ms latency while my kids play roblox with a sub 100ms latency. They've said it is caused by the software on the modem being outdated, it blocks certain games and programs, if this is true, why has this only become an issue since last Saturday? One day, I'm going to take my 7 years worth of transcripts to someone in the legal field and see if they can stick up at&t's rear for a change. Until they decide to allow us access to advanced settings, make fixed wireless a proper connection by giving us public IP addresses, and stop being a bunch of all around (Edited per community guidelines)heads, I'm afraid we are at the mercy of the mighty at&t (Edited per community guidelines), unless someone knows of a working, modded firmware for the 5268ac. If you do, please share with the rest of us.

Latency on wow reaches 4k at times I don't think it's the equipment something gone bad some where because the last 3 months has been fine even during peak times.

@Perkins.j.88 Pace 5268ac is outdated? I've only had att fixed wireless for a month, and that's the one they gave me. They're something else, it's a shady business they're running.

I use my hotspot on my Verizon phone the latency higher but I am able to atleast rule out the fact that it's has nothing to do with my equipment.

I firmly believe the problem is not a real problem. What I mean is, this problem was created by AT&T forcing software changes that do not show up in the logs for the 5268ac modem. If you disconnect the ethernet that runs from the antenna to your modem, then run a factory reset, you will be able to access DMZ and pinholes settings up until you establish a connection with at&t servers, at which point they force push a software update that was created solely to limit the access end users have to router settings, they deny this, but I know for a fact the advanced options are removed only after I allow a connection to at&t by plugging the Ethernet back in. They deny that at&t has anything to do with the removal of the options, they truly believe we are incompetent. I have also heard that we sit behind an upstream router located who knows where, but because of this we are assigned a private IP address as opposed to the public IP address you would get with a hardwired uverse gateway.

It's 10:00AM and you know what that means: this is my daily check-in for my terrible connection. Sitting here at 50KB/s and 176ms latency 43% packet loss.

12:30 pm for me and my last fcc speed test showed 20mbps up, 268ms ping, 23% packet loss. ATT, what are you guys doing to fix this.

@KP45697 They're not doing anything to fix it but they sure did something to break it.

If it could just go back to the way it was a month ago, it'd be excellent. I had absolutely no problems with the network itself until then and I praised it and suggested it to friends and family. Not now. I'll just tell them to go with CSpire.

I only ever complained about the data cap. And I'm on the 340 promo. Yeah I was about to get my parents hooked up with it. Not until they fix whatever if going on.

A couple of family members of mine signed up for the Fixed Wireless system last year and I'm just waiting for them to call me up and try to get me to fix their internet any day now and I"m just going to have to tell them there's nothing I (or AT&T, apparently) can do about it and they are going to have to adjust to barely being able to use it or stay up to 3 AM to use it how they want.

Also the more I think about it, the less I believe the congestion theory because all of us live in vastly different places, California, Ohio, Mississippi with varying population densities, yet all our connections plummeted in quality around the same time. I just cannot believe all these people signed up for Fixed Wireless all across the country in the same 2-3 week period, stressing the network. THat's ludicrous.

It has to be throttling/shaping of our traffic and prioritizing us at the lowest level. I know I repeat this over and over but this just seems like the most likely scenario. 40% packet loss across the country is ridiculous.

I just want to stress that this is not the fault of the AT&T CSRs or other employees that read these posts. They probably can't say or don't know the real issues/policy changes behind the problems but the copy and paste instructions to reset our routers or disconnect everything but one computer are not helpful.

So about 10 am to 10 pm, It's a no internet for anybody. Middle of the night, works just fine. I was just talking to malleable_malus about it, this is ridiculous. And what's worse is they just ignore everyone, no mentions of working on it. Not even [EDITED], we got your money hahahahahahahah" I wish it was a simple just pack up and move a wee bit closer. I could've had spectrum but they were juuuuust out of reach.

Spectrum stops a mile down my road. They quoted me $70k to run it if I did the construction lol ATT has 1 fiber line and one 50/100/150 pair cable running in my front yard. Told me I couldn't get service on either.

Geez, at my old place our county started their own broadband service. It was amazing, the one thing i miss the most about that place now lol. it'd be nice if broadband's area expansion was more funded at this rate, internet's became a necessity anymore.

Everyday I look into the log of my gateway and at 350 pm right when thing start to go bad I see it change to a different ip then I do my tracert and I'm getting up addresses that are a partial time of about 4 to be exact I ping them and they all time out but that's to blizzard's central route server cause I live in texas but my gateway tells me in that test it's at 325 m/s I do a straight ping then it starts back at 1ms. The west serves are at anywhere from 100ms to 400ms. It's funny I can play from 10am to 350pm then it makes it impossible to play so I give up. But who knows.

@unleadedgass Hmm, good catch, unleaded. I'm going to have to examine my logs and see if my IP address is getting changed right before things go south.

I use Kiwi Syslog server so it'll be easy to record exactly when this happens for a couple of days.

My game has returned to almost normal now the server is ping at full dunn0 if they use these2 on your route 12.122.2.22.5 and 12.122.133.193 but partial before now full answers back. And I noticed the last 3 hops are totally different now then when I was having problems. But I'm not an expert.

I'm just glad at this point that there are enough people having the same problem that this can't be isolated. I spoke to a CSR last night and I was able to get him to break the script and tell me what was going on. He said that they have been flooded with calls from people having the same packet loss issues. He was going to get another ticket ordered to look at the tower even though I doubt anything changes from it. But he gave me a case ID and instructed me to keep calling in and giving them the same story until it gets fixed. Glad to know they are aware, unfortunately it doesn't seem like they are doing much.

Any information that I can share from my router logs that someone would want for a comparison, I will gladly do so. My knowledge is pretty basic but I can follow instructions on how to get it.

Basically we are being routed to some servers that are partially working this your system has to find a way around them to one point were ever your going to this slowing you down in my case there are only few servers they have at different points. Just for the heck of it I got on my Verizon hotspot did you know in my case in the hop I was going through att servers 2 of them really strange same ip that my att routers going through.

I've had ATT Fixed wireless since Feb of 2019. It has always worked amazing I'm not even a mile away from the tower. Getting and still getting 60 download and 23 upload... Since the 7th of Jan 2020. I've haven't been able to play my online game league of legends. I have higher ping along with ping spikes which I found out later that I'm just losing a LOT of packets. Since, the 7th I've been calling them every since. Had them look at the tower nearest to me. I had 3 techs already came out. I feel bad for them because they can't do anything about it. I went ahead and had them replace my antenna and modem. That didn't solve it either. I called in after the last tech left yesterday the 20th... I told them it still isn't fixed and saying it is packet loss. The lady told me she will submit it and look into it in a broader area where I live to search for the problem. Said to give her a week so after a week if they don't call me back(I made it very clear I wanted to get notified). I will then be calling back and I will keep calling every day until this gets straighten out.

About the IP changes I don't know if my IP changed during an online game of League of Legends. Well, my normal ping is flat 60 ping. But, since all this stuff has went down I've had about a ping of 78... Well I just played a game with some friends when my ping is jittering around 74- 90 yea I don't mind it until I disconnected and reconnected then my ping was extremely unstable. Here's the catcher... few minutes later in the game I DISCONNECTED again... wait a few seconds I reconnected... Back to the 74 to 90 ish ping. How is it that me disconnecting and reconnecting changes my ping?(Did it 3-4 times during the game) I'm wired into the modem.

It's the same thing that's happening to everyone. The last CSR I talked to said that a technician did find something wrong with the antenna on the tower closest to me and that it was scheduled to be restored by Wednesday. I doubt it will fix anything because almost everyone on this thread has had pretty much the same experience and all problems started within the same time frame. ATT has changed something and it's causing the problems everyone is having.

Man I thought I was reading my post lol. You are having the exact same problem to the tee mine started on jan 10th I play wow alot I live in North East Texas this problem starts at 355pm to 2300 every day they are supposed to check the tower but I think it's a bigger problem then that. I keep getting disconnected from blizzard servers due to my connection keeps dropping out and my latency before this happened was 56ms to 75ms now it's a present time 90 to 4k which is horrible. Hope they fix it there still working on my problem.

What we have to remember this system bounces from tower to tower maybe enough of us call in they might find it or the firewall in the routers doing crazy stuff I dunno.

Yea that packet loss will just drop you from games. Can't even do the simplest of things without disconnecting. it's 7:40 pm est here and i still have strict NAT, 30% packet loss, and 279 ms ping. I'm waiting to see when it magically clears up, i think it was 10 pm est for me. Lol it's a big pain in the hind quarters.
