Can't print to wi-fi printer from mobile

Hi, first let me preface this with the fact that this all worked flawlessly with spectrum internet. Now that we have ATT fiber we are unable to print from our android phones and tablets. Laptops (Both wired and wireless) print just fine. I've tried different service plugins on the android devices and have even gone as far as to split 2.4ghz from 5ghz in the router... despite all the warnings. BGW210-700 Gateway, Dell Laser printer. Been fiddling with this for months now and really need the functionality back. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

If you can control the IP, Gateway and Subnet mask, you could try manually setting it to something in the LAN subnet of your Gateway, but outside the DHCP range.  That way it will have a proper, fixed, address on your subnet.  Then you should be able to print to it from anything.

Can you explain what app/utility/service you're trying to use to print from your phone?  Google Print Services, a Dell service or what?  The question goes into how the print stream gets to the printer.

I've tried the default android service, Samsung print service, google cloud print, and Mopria. None will work.

We're here to help, @njordan1784.

  • Just to confirm, you have both the printer and your android devices on the same Wi-Fi (2.4ghz or 5ghz)?
  • Have you already tried rebooting your gateway?

We recommend:

  • Rebooting your gateway.
  • Forgetting the network settings on your android devices after the reboot and reconnect them to your printer.

Let us know if this helps or if you have already done this.

Yep, done both of those things. I've tried different service plugins on the android devices and have even gone as far as to split 2.4ghz from 5ghz in the router... despite all the warnings. Seems like maybe a firewall issue or something? Previous router never did this so it has to be a setting in the gateway.

We understand that you're still having trouble getting your WiFi printer to work @njordan1784.

  • Is your printer showing connected to the internet?
  • Have there been any configurations made to your gateway?
  • We would suggest that you reset the router to factory settings to see if there is something blocking the connection.

Please let us know if after resetting the router if your able to get connected.

Thanks for looking into this.

Yes, the printer shows that it is connected to the network but has an IP address of 169.254.x.x which, in the Dell printer manual, specifically states that there is a network issue, not a hardware issue. Strange, the Windows PCs still can print to it.

I reset the gateway to factory settings so there are no extra configurations in this latest test. I had a few port forwards in for gaming systems since that must be done to fix this gateway's NAT issues. I even went so far as to reset the printer settings to no avail.

Still having the same issues after all that resetting and testing. Again, this is not an issue I had with the old spectrum networking equipment. Is there a setting I can change to make this work in the gateway?

That IP address means that it's made up its own IP address because it didn't get a DHCP response.  I'm not sure how in the world the Windows PCs are printing to id... unless they're using Wi-FI Direct?  Are the PC's wireless?

It would be nice to try that but this is not a web-based printer. There are no DNS settings. Only IP, Gateway, and Subnet mask.

@JefferMC I'm not using wi-fi direct. I've tried it and it didn't work. PCs are wired typically. Laptop can still print when it is un-docked on wi-fi.

This really seems like it is a gateway setting that is blocking the printer somehow.
