Can I replace my 2WIRE 3800HGV-B residential gateway with a used one from EBAY?

I paid for my current gateway 4 years ago. Two of the ethernet ports stopped working.

ATT said if they replace the gateway (and it must be with a newer model) I will have to pay $7/mo rental.

I asked if I can replace it myself with a used model and they said they will not register the different serial number into their system for it to work.

Is this true?

Is there a way around it?

I understand that I can attach another router to my current gateway to get back to 4 e/n ports but I'd prefer to keep it simple.

Thanks for any advice.

The simple way is to buy a switch.  I use a netgear switch and they come in 4 8 16 ports.  Plug the switch into the Rg and your other devices into the switch.

If I could just tell ATT my replacement's  serial number, that would be simpler for me.

Are you saying it is not possible to have a replacement (used) 8300hgv-b configured in by ATT?

Has anyone been able to have this done?

If I add a switch, is the ATT gateway still performing the firewall functions and reporting the status etc.?
