Trouble with iOS mail setup for AT&T (Bellsouth.net) account

I'm trying to setup an att email account (bellsouth.net acct) on my iPad running iOS 13 and running into a problem mid way through the setup. Here are the steps i'm taking

1. "Add Account" under the Accounts and Passwords setup menu

2. Tap Yahoo from the selection list

3. Enter my bellsouth.net email ID

This is where I'm having trouble. According the AT&T setup instructions I should then be taken to a screen to enter my account ID and password. That screen flashes briefly but then disappears so I can't complete the setup. I was running iOS 12 when it first happened so I then updated to the latest version of iOS 13 but got the same results. Has anyone seen this issue?

After hours of troubleshooting and no resolution from either AT&T or Apple (they did try to help, especially Apple), I discovered the problem on my own: When the iPhone reproduces the Username in the manually entered Mail App, it only has the username before the @ sign. This doesn't matter for most mailservers as they're dedicated to a single domain name (i.e. gmail.com). But AT&T mailservers direct multiple domains to common att.net mailservers.

  • Example: AT&T consumer email is username@att.NET but the same mailserver also handles 11 other email domains, such as @sbcglobal.net, @pacbell.net, @ameritech.net, and @currently.com. There can be multiple unique jsmith email accounts (jsmith@att.net, jsmith@pacbell.net, jsmith@ameritech.net) going to the same mailserver.

Therefore, when using IMAP or POP 3, the entire username must be entered, i.e. jsmith@att.net. In the iPhone the default username will show up as jsmith, even though on the New Account screen has the full username entered, such as jsmith@att.net. It will also come up with inbound and outbound addresses which aren't correct. They all need to be changed.

Once I solved these issues, following the steps laid out by AT&T works.

How To Set Up Email on a Wireless Device is a link to the AT&T Help Page explaining how to set up Smartphones.

Two other issues before you start:

  1. At one time I could select Yahoo when configuring a new att.net mailbox on iPhone Mail. The AT&T Help Desk recommends this first. If you can do that, great, it's much easier. But I can't do it now, and I tried on multiple iOS devices (3 iPhones and 2 iPads) in March 2021. I believe it's related to AT&T's email security upgrade. I end up in a loop where I enter my username, then go to an old AT&T Secure Login for a username and password, then end up on a Change Password screen. Even if you change your password, don't bother. It results in an endless loop of returning to the login page then the change password page. A quick Google search shows lots of others can't either. So save some agita and go straight to Other when using Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account.
  2. This is just a guess but I think some simple, grandfathered passwords will be rejected by the mailserver, again due to the security upgrade. I had an old email address I use for sales responses. It has a 6 character password that was set up in 2007 before 8 characters was required. Even doing everything else right as stated above, it wouldn't work. So I did it again with a Secure Mail Key for the account and used that for the password. It worked. Or change to a currently accepted password, but I found the Secure Mail Key the reliable option.

Link "Create A Secure Mail Key"

Here are the steps I have been able to do on 5 different iOS devices:

  1. Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account > Other
  2. Enter your user information (in the example I use John Smith)
    1. Name: John Smith
    2. Email: jsmith@att.net
    3. Password: <use a Secure Mail Key password>
    4. Description: AT&T (or whatever, this only appears in your app)
    5. Select Next. Verifying will be displayed. It likely won't find it and give you a New Account page with mostly incorrect information you need to change. (This seems like it's an Mail App issue).
  3. On the New Account Page, select IMAP or POP (for POP3)
  4. If on POP:
    1. INCOMING MAIL SERVER
      1. Host Name: inbound.att.net
      2. User Name: jsmith@att.net
      3. Password: <paste Secure Mail Key>
    2. OUTGOING MAIL SERVER
      1. Host Name: outbound.att.net
      2. User Name: jsmith@att.net
      3. Password: <paste Secure Mail Key>
  5. If on IMAP
    1. INCOMING MAIL SERVER
      1. Host Name: imap.mail.att.net
      2. User Name: jsmith@att.net
      3. Password: <paste Secure Mail Key>
    2. OUTGOING MAIL SERVER
      1. Host Name: SMTP.mail.att.net
      2. User Name: jsmith@att.net
      3. Password: <paste Secure Mail Key>

Important: There are no separate screens for IMAP and POP. The data entered in IMAP will also be used for POP and vice versa, so be sure to enter the correct info for the protocol used. Also, the AT&T Help page identifies Ports. There is no place on the New Accounts configuration page to enter the Port. It should configure automatically if all other steps are followed. If not, there is a way to get to the ports, but that's more detailed for this help page.

When this is complete, it will verify the date input. If successful green checks should appear. If so your device is configured correctly. You can launch the iPhone Mail app.

There are a couple of steps you can take which may help resolve your email setup experience, @davidd2567!

Allow us to assist. One step you can take is to update the email app clear the cache and cookies on your browser as old data can cause sign-in issues at times.

Another step includes updating your browser. Some features and settings require the latest version of the browser to operate correctly. Additionally, disable browser tools or add-ons (varies by device and browser).

Finally, verify or update your AT&T email settings by performing the following steps:

  1. Select Preferences > Account Information.
  2. Choose your mail account.
  3. Select POP3 or IMAP.
  4. Confirm User name.
  5. Enter your password or secure mail key.
  6. Confirm or enter the following settings:
    1. Incoming Mail Server - inbound.att.net (POP3) or imap.mail.att.net (IMAP)
    2. Outgoing Mail Server - outbound.att.net (POP3) or smtp.mail.att.net (IMAP)
  7. In Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), choose Edit SMTP Server List.
  8. Confirm:
    1. Server Name - outbound.att.net or smtp.mail.att.net.
    2. Use default ports - 25, 465, 587.
    3. Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is selected.
  9. Select OK.
  10. On Advanced tab, confirm:
    1. SSL checkbox is selected.
    2. Authentication field is set for Password.
  11. Close window.

We hope this info helps.

Not sure how many others have tried this but it did not work for me.  Here’s what worked for my Bellsouth.net email:

1. Go to settings

2. Scroll to and click/tap on Mail

3. Click/tap Accounts to show email accounts

4. if there’s a bellsouth email address Delete it.

5. Click/Tap add new account

6. Click/Tap on Yahoo Mail

7. On the sign in screen enter your Bellsouth email address and click/tap Continue

8. A second sign in screen for Yahoo will display.

9. Enter Bellsouth email address and password.

10. The same screen will display than has pick your email provider yet again but at the top of the screen you will see the option to Save - click/tap that.

11. Voila you are done!

I tried everything yesterday to get my husband's bellsouth email account set up on his new iphone 12 without any success.  I deleted the account from the phone and have NO luck getting his email back on his phone.  I kept getting "bad request" when trying to enter the password.

I am having the same issue and trying to connect my father‘sbellsouth.net email address to his iPhone EXR that is running the most up-to-date version of iOS. I have just left the AT&T store and the representative who worked with me there said that she could only assist with passwords. She contacted a manager at another store and they said that the bellsouth.net email would be phasing out and that your phones could no longer connect to them. I explained that that should not be possible because people would not upgrade their phones if that was the possibility and they needed to make people aware of that. I know that it was not her fault and she’s probably just going off of information that shared online. Even the information that has been shared in this chat has not been helpful in setting up that account. AT&T, any

Thank you SO much for these detailed instructions.  After 2 hours trying a lot of other suggestions, this worked for me. The key was the secure mail key.

My mom was unable to receive incoming email on her iphone. I tried following steps from suggestions in this thread but none of it worked for her bellsouth.net email. I wasted a lot of time trying to figure this out. I found this information via google search: https://itstillworks.com/settings-bellsouth-mail-iphone-16880.html and these instructions worked. She is finally receiving email again. She would have never been able to figure this out on her own. This is ridiculous that att/bellsouth/yahoo/apple don't get this bug fixed. Also, I did create a "secure mail key" and used that as the password. I am not sure if that matters or not. I think the main issue was changing the iphone email account set up default "host name" and "user name" according to the instructions in the link above. I hope this is helpful to others.
