How do I unmerge AT&T and Yahoo email accounts?

Split.png

You may have been notified that your E-mail account is about to get unmerged. You may have had a merged account where your AT&T E-mail and Yahoo E-mail were merged into a single account, which allowed the password and inboxes to be shared.

If you are not sure if you have a merged account, it is likely you have one if:

  • You can sign in to your merged E-mail account using either you AT&T or your Yahoo E-mail address.
  • You can sign in to myA&T with either your AT&T or Yahoo E-mail addresses.
  • You use the same password for both AT&T and Yahoo E-mail accounts.
  • Your mailbox receives messages from both your AT&T and Yahoo E-mail address.
  • When you reset the password, it changes the password on both Yahoo and AT&T accounts.
  • When trying to reset your Yahoo password, it redirects you to myAT&T.

What is Happening?
Beginning mid-November 2017, you will no longer be able to sign in to myAT&T or att.net with your Yahoo ID.
Beginning early December 2017, all merged email accounts will be separated into two separate email accounts.

What does this mean to you?

Beginning in mid-November 2017, you will need to start using your AT&T email address to sign in to myAT&T instead of your Yahoo email address.

  • To access your AT&T account in myAT&T, you’ll need to sign in using your AT&T email address. (Don’t worry, we’ll tell you what it is if you try to sign in with your Yahoo email address.)
  • To access your AT&T email account through att.net, you’ll need to use your AT&T email address through currently.att.yahoo.com and clicking on the mail icon at the top. (Again, we’ll tell you what it is if you try to sign in with your Yahoo email address.)

You’ll need to start signing in to your AT&T and Yahoo email accounts separately since you will now have two unique accounts.

  • The passwords will not change until you decide to change them.
  • Your AT&T E-mail account will be empty. This includes E-mails, contacts, calendar, information associated with Yahoo sites (Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Groups, Tumblr, finance portfolios). All of this information will be on your Yahoo E-mail account.
  • Your Yahoo E-mail password can be managed through the Yahoo Member Center.

What about my Sub-accounts?

  • All Yahoo accounts will become stand alone accounts.
  • Just like the parent accounts, any subaccounts that were linked to a yahoo account, the AT&T E-mail account will be empty and all the E-mails, contacts, and other things will be stay with the Yahoo account.
  • The AT&T subaccounts will still be subaccounts under the primary AT&T E-mail account.

What about my E-mails, Contacts, and Folders

  • Your E-mails, Contacts, and Folders for your merged accounts will be available when you login with your YahooID.
  • For your Yahoo E-mail, Contacts, and Folder issues, please reach out to Yahoo.
    • If you are getting an AT&T error message or not seeing your E-mails, Contacts, or Folders, such as a terminated account, try clearing your cache and cookies or using a different browser. Make sure you are logging in with your @yahoo.com account at mail.yahoo.com.
    • You can reset your password by selecting forgot password.
    • If you are missing E-mails, you can recover your E-mail at this site.

Not able to Sign In

  • Yahoo E-mail - Please contact Yahoo, as we no longer have access to Yahoo accounts.
  • AT&T - Getting incorrect password? Go to our help article to get back into your account.
    • Suspended / Inactive / Error 550.5.2.1 - Accounts were disabled from inactivity during the unmerge. To fix this, try to sign in and after 48 hours, your E-mail account will become active again.
    • Getting redirected to Yahoo site - Clear your cache and cookies or try using a different browser. Make sure you are logging into the right site. Go to currently.com and click on the mail icon at the top-right.

If you had/have a merged email account....your original email account, the one that you had prior to "merging" with AT&T (mine was email@sbcglobal.net), with the "unmerge", all of your emails and folders with emails in them reverted back to the original account.  I found all of mine by signing in to the @yahoo.com account that I had at the time of the merger (about 15yrs ago).  Of course, that is not the email account at which you will receive emails using your current email address (thank you AT&T for making this a nightmare).  So you have your former account in which you have access to the files and folders, and then you have the account in which you can receive your "normal" emails. Someone has said that you can add one account to another but I have not found a way to successfully do that.  So, once again, thank you AT&T, you can forward emails to the account where your folders are, or you can rebuild the file/folder structure that you had and forward the emails (one at a time) from the account where you folders are to the AT&T account where you receive emails.  To their credit, AT&T has been telling us for weeks this was coming.  What they failed to tell us, and I wonder if it's because they had no idea, the folders and emails that have been filed and saved for many years for whatever purpose would not be synced or associated with the unmerged AT&T email account.Good news, bad news, worse news..... Good news is your "stuff" is still there, bad news is that without a ton of work you cannot have what had worked very well for you for quite a few years, worse news is AT&T don't give a care.

Hello @vegrest

A recent change with Yahoo has caused AT&T e-mail address to unmerge from their servers. You can go to our site http://www.att.net and click on E-mail to access your e-mail at any time. Here is a link to get directly to your email and sign in.

What I don't understand is not only did I loose all my saved folders in my email account I lost all the contacts as well from an account (xxx@sbcglobal.net) that I used exclusively. The account I apparent was merged with with yahoo is not an account I ever used. In fact if I am not mistaken the whole reason I merged it was because I unintentionally created it and thought I had to merge it for some reason. I just want to continue using my xxx@sbcglobal.net with all my folders and contacts restored. I'm having difficulty even knowing where to sign in for my email via att...I automatically get redirected to yahoo....I'm dying here!!! I need this fixed!! I had some vip emails saved along with numerous vip addresses!!!

Okay, I need to know how to get my folders and my current emails in the same place. I suspect the answer isn't the same for everyone, since we have different histories with AT&T and Yahoo!.

Hello @silversweet,

Thank you so much for letting us know that this is happening.  My name is Kayleigh, and I will provide you will all of the information I can offer to help you get your emails back.  I know how important saved emails are, and I want to make sure that you can get them back if it is possible.

Email malfunctions like this are common if you set up your email with another program, such as Microsoft Outlook.  If you use a program to manage your email, then you should correct your sync settings so that your email will sync again.  You can click here for what those settings should be. If they’re all correct, I recommend using the protocol opposite of what you are using.  For example, if you’re currently using POP3, you should switch to IMAP.

If you are logging directly into the att.net web mail client and still having these issues, then it could be an issue with your web browser.  Please clear your cache and cookies before trying again, and if that does not work, then please try a web browser other than the one you normally use.  We recommend using Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.  If you have done all of that, and it’s still not working, please look for any error codes on the page. You can click here if you do find an error code to find out what it means and what to do about it.

If you have tried all of this, and your mail is still missing, then please reach out to our email managers at Yahoo as soon as possible so that they can have the best chance of restoring your email possible.  They have a dedicated restoral request form here. If, for any reason, it will not allow you to complete the restore request, then please click the blue “Contact Us” link at the top-right corner of this page to get further assistance from them. Thank you very much.
