How do I unmerge AT&T and Yahoo email accounts?

Split.png

You may have been notified that your E-mail account is about to get unmerged. You may have had a merged account where your AT&T E-mail and Yahoo E-mail were merged into a single account, which allowed the password and inboxes to be shared.

If you are not sure if you have a merged account, it is likely you have one if:

  • You can sign in to your merged E-mail account using either you AT&T or your Yahoo E-mail address.
  • You can sign in to myA&T with either your AT&T or Yahoo E-mail addresses.
  • You use the same password for both AT&T and Yahoo E-mail accounts.
  • Your mailbox receives messages from both your AT&T and Yahoo E-mail address.
  • When you reset the password, it changes the password on both Yahoo and AT&T accounts.
  • When trying to reset your Yahoo password, it redirects you to myAT&T.

What is Happening?
Beginning mid-November 2017, you will no longer be able to sign in to myAT&T or att.net with your Yahoo ID.
Beginning early December 2017, all merged email accounts will be separated into two separate email accounts.

What does this mean to you?

Beginning in mid-November 2017, you will need to start using your AT&T email address to sign in to myAT&T instead of your Yahoo email address.

  • To access your AT&T account in myAT&T, you’ll need to sign in using your AT&T email address. (Don’t worry, we’ll tell you what it is if you try to sign in with your Yahoo email address.)
  • To access your AT&T email account through att.net, you’ll need to use your AT&T email address through currently.att.yahoo.com and clicking on the mail icon at the top. (Again, we’ll tell you what it is if you try to sign in with your Yahoo email address.)

You’ll need to start signing in to your AT&T and Yahoo email accounts separately since you will now have two unique accounts.

  • The passwords will not change until you decide to change them.
  • Your AT&T E-mail account will be empty. This includes E-mails, contacts, calendar, information associated with Yahoo sites (Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Groups, Tumblr, finance portfolios). All of this information will be on your Yahoo E-mail account.
  • Your Yahoo E-mail password can be managed through the Yahoo Member Center.

What about my Sub-accounts?

  • All Yahoo accounts will become stand alone accounts.
  • Just like the parent accounts, any subaccounts that were linked to a yahoo account, the AT&T E-mail account will be empty and all the E-mails, contacts, and other things will be stay with the Yahoo account.
  • The AT&T subaccounts will still be subaccounts under the primary AT&T E-mail account.

What about my E-mails, Contacts, and Folders

  • Your E-mails, Contacts, and Folders for your merged accounts will be available when you login with your YahooID.
  • For your Yahoo E-mail, Contacts, and Folder issues, please reach out to Yahoo.
    • If you are getting an AT&T error message or not seeing your E-mails, Contacts, or Folders, such as a terminated account, try clearing your cache and cookies or using a different browser. Make sure you are logging in with your @yahoo.com account at mail.yahoo.com.
    • You can reset your password by selecting forgot password.
    • If you are missing E-mails, you can recover your E-mail at this site.

Not able to Sign In

  • Yahoo E-mail - Please contact Yahoo, as we no longer have access to Yahoo accounts.
  • AT&T - Getting incorrect password? Go to our help article to get back into your account.
    • Suspended / Inactive / Error 550.5.2.1 - Accounts were disabled from inactivity during the unmerge. To fix this, try to sign in and after 48 hours, your E-mail account will become active again.
    • Getting redirected to Yahoo site - Clear your cache and cookies or try using a different browser. Make sure you are logging into the right site. Go to currently.com and click on the mail icon at the top-right.

This was managed and communicated horribly. Please tell me how I can get my Yahoo calendar info over to ATT.  When I try to add a calendar using the caldav. URL I get an error.

Now that they are un-merged, why do I still see Yahoo in the top left when I sign into att.net mail?  It is very confusing.

You can't just do something like this and expect everyone to blithely accept that years of data are not available to them.

Yesterday afternoon, I was creating a new email in my sbcglobal email account, and it froze up, and forced me to log back in.  Once I logged back in, I had just one email in my inbox (whereas previously I had thousands), and all of my folders holding important data from the last 10 years were gone.  It was as if my email account was reset completely.  Not sure where to go for help.  It would be devastating to not be able to get this information back.

HELP!!

I have a friend experiencing the same issue.  This does not seem to be a one-off issue.  When will ATT issue some information such as Root Cause and recovery timelines?

Me too,  They lost all of my folders.  I will never have AT&T service unless they find a way to get them back for me.  I had 17 years of valuable information and memories.

In 2012, your Yahoo Mail (@yahoo.com) and AT&T mail (@att.net, @sbcglobal.net, @ameritech.net, etc.) were merged, meaning anything sent to any of those addresses came into one inbox.  On 12/19/2017, those accounts were unmerged, meaning that you now have two separate and uncombined email accounts -- your Yahoo email and your AT&T email.  Going forward, any email sent to your AT&T email address will show up in that inbox.  Likewise, going forward, any email sent to your @yahoo.com email address will show up in that inbox.  Only the basic folders (Inbox, Sent, Deleted Items, Bulk Mail, etc.) exist in your AT&T account and, aside from any new mail in your inbox, all those folders are empty.  You can create new folders in your AT&T email account.  Furthermore, if you had sub-accounts, they also unmerged as a separate account.  Filters, disposable addresses, etc., remained with your Yahoo email account.

The good news is that you did NOT lose your old emails or folders that existed prior to the unmerging.  They can still be found in your @yahoo.com account (that's why you can see them in your Yahoo mail app on your phone).  The only other good news is that if you use an email app that enables unified emails on a smartphone (meaning the importing of multiple email accounts into one app), e.g., TypeApp, you can see all emails and folders as if they are combined or unified.  There are probably desktop apps that do the same thing, although they may not be free.

Now for the bad news.  there's probably a way, but I could not figure out an easy way to import all of my yahoo mail folders into my now unmerged AT&T email account.  Even worse, assuming that you use web based email on a desktop, you cannot easily use the same browser to open both email accounts in different tabs (with some effort, you can do it but it creates other issues)!  Without going into a lot of detail, the reason why will become obvious if you use my.yahoo.com.  The only workaround that I could see is to open your Yahoo mail in one browser and your AT&T email in another browser.  When you do, you'll notice that my.yahoo.com has a completely different look on each browser depending on the account.  Another option (albeit a horrible one, IMHO) is to revert to using your Yahoo email address exclusively which is, of course, a monumental hassle if you've been using and giving out your AT&T email address for the last 5+ years.

The above is probably not the answer you've been hoping for, but I hope it helps for now.

I have the same problem which all of my folders are gone.  Please provide solutions to this problem ASAP.  I urgently need important information in them now.  This is horrible to see them gone.

Don't panic your older emails and folders are on Yahoo.com. Try logging in to Yahoo mail with the same username and password but use:  @yahoo.com  instead of  @att.net.
If that doesn't get you in, use the Yahoo username retrieval or password reset help tool. If you had a merged account you should see an option to mail the link to your  att.net email account which is now a blank new account.
As mentioned above by Tutor you cannot log into both Yahoo.com and att.net email pages in the same browser. (When you log into one it changes the other tab also) So if you need both open use a different browser for one of them.
Once you have the link to reset your password on Yahoo mail just follow the directions. Then log in to Yahoo mail and you should see all your old att.net emails and folders.
Unfortunately there is no way to import your folders back into the new att.net mail account. So you either have to recreate the folders in the new att.net page and forward the old emails over and resort them into the folders. But the "From" title on all of them will now read "youremail@yahoo.com" instead of the original sender. What a pain.(And right during the holidays when you are getting shipping notices etc.)
I hope this helps someone find their emails and folders.
And if anyone knows a better way to export or import entire folders between email providers please post it.
