Can't Connect To bellsouth.net Email Using Thunderbird

Just recently started having issues with connecting to my old bellsouth.net email address using Mozilla Thunderbird on a Windows 7 Ultimate PC.  It still works fine on my iPhone.

When the problem started, I found an article saying to use inbound.att.net now instead of the yahoo pop server that we switched to some years ago.  I made that change, still using port 995 but keep getting the error:

Sending of password for user [email scrubbed] did not succeed.  Mail server inbound.att.net responded: Server error - Please try again later.

Any idea whats going on here?

We're happy to help you, @johnmsch.

We suggest switching from the POP3 server to IMAP for a better email experience. Follow these steps:

  1. Select File > Account Settings.
  2. Select your AT&T email account and then select Change
  3. Confirm or enter the following IMAP or POP settings:
    • Incoming server - http://sm.att.com/d6b92097 (IMAP) or http://sm.att.com/2ce5cd58 (POP3)
    • Outgoing server - http://sm.att.com/86e8a7a6 (IMAP) or http://sm.att.com/6fd49029 (POP3)
  4. Check your User Name (full AT&T email address).
  5. In the password field, enter your secure mail key and select the Remember password checkbox.
  6. Select Next. Outlook will test your account settings.
  7. Select Close, then Finish.

Let us know how it went.

Thanks for the reply.

I prefer to use POP3 instead of IMAP.  When I access this account on my PC, I want to download the messages in Thunderbird and then delete them from the server.  It has been my understanding that you can't delete them from the server using IMAP.

What do you mean by "enter your secure email key"?
