ATT Wireless number required to sign in to email account?

When I try to sign into my [email scrubbed] webmail account after entering my login and password, I get a notice requiring me to update my profile information by entering my zip code and wireless number which can be used to text me a code if needed to reset my password or recover my account.  However, whenever I go to my profile page, the instructions for entering a wireless number clearly require it to be an ATT wireless phone number as shown in the instructions below copied from the webpage.  So, if I don't have an ATT wireless phone (which I don't) or don't want to use it for account recovery, how on earth do I bypass this screen in order to log into my webmail account?  There is no option to "skip" this step or decline.

Enter your AT&T wireless number

Enter your AT&T wireless number if you want to use it to sign in.

To keep your info safe, we'll send you a verification code to make sure you're you.

We're here to help with your email, @NewName.

We recommend resetting you email password to resync your account. Then try logging in again.

If that does not help, let us know:

  • Do you currently have any service with us?
  • Are you logging in on a new device?

Let us know if this helps.

Thanks for your reply, @ATTHelp.  I do have internet service with ATT which I've had for 2+ years.  I am not logging in from a new device.  I'm using the same PC to log in to my webmail account the same way I've been doing for 2 years.  So, why am I required to enter my zip code and an ATT mobile phone number (which I do not have) in order to log into my webmail account now?  I did manage to get into it after several attempts.  I also logged into my ATT account profile, which is where I discovered that entering a mobile number for account recovery or password reset is optional.  So, why am I getting this message that makes it appear as though I am required to enter a mobile number in order to log into my account?

I'll try the password reset later if this problem persists.  Thanks.

I am having the same problem with my email sign in process, and it is taking so much of my time to have another step to do.  My only phone is a landline account with AT&T, so I am paying AT&T for a phone as it is and don't want to be bothered with this step asking for a wireless number as well.  I like my password and don't want to change it and I cannot find anything on my account that says I have an option about this issue.  Is anyone from AT&T out there to answer this question definitively?  Thanks.

@gon I hope someone from AT&T responds and can clarify why this is happening.  I did not reset my password, but have figured out a workaround.  For whatever reason, when I attempt to sign in on my PC, then get the screen requiring that I enter an AT&T wireless number, which I do not have, if I close the browser and reopen, then go directly to ATT.net (which redirects to Currently.com), it usually allows me to access my email.  But, like you said, it's ridiculous to have to go through so many steps and frustration each time.  So, I started leaving my email account open all the time, unlike my previous practice of closing it nightly.  I've had the same problem occur on my smartphone where I access webmail through the Chrome browser rather than the app.  My email stays open until for unknown reasons it occasionally requires me to sign back in and I get that annoying message again asking for my AT&T wireless number.  If you're listening, AT&T, please get rid of this annoyance that serves no useful purpose other than to frustrate your customers.

Having the same issue; very fustrating.  Why won't they just offer a phone call/verbal pin option like most other sites do.  I don't have text capability (flip cell phone; disabled text since I didn't want to pay extra for a service I refuse to use).   Update the email log in badger, please.

Does anyone have a solution to this?  It will not let me into my email with out "updating" my profile and adding a phone number.

Once I get prompted to enter that data, 86, I just hit the back button and it automatically takes me to my email. Fustrating but works.   Not sure for how long, though.   :)

@86gtconv After entering my login info, then getting this ridiculous "Enter your AT&T  Wireless Number" screen, I then enter ATT.net in the web browser URL line, which then somehow miraculously redirects to my open email account.  I haven't tried the back button approach that @lylejk" suggests, but that may work also.  It would be nice if an ATT rep would chime in on this and tell us why this extra step is necessary and misleading.

That did work!  At least this time, lol.  I was using the back button and it was working , then it quit.  BTW, I spent over two hours yesterday getting bounced around various ATT numbers/transfers/reps/automated systems trying to get someone who could help.  Even spent some time on the  ATT email support web page via a chat session.  None of that proved helpful.  The one rep named Kyle, badge # PF5HYR5, told me that I had to have a wireless number of it would not work.  I asked, numerous times, to get transferred to a supervisor, but he refused. I was never rude, or loud, but persistent.  I would not hang up and just kept requesting to be transferred to a supervisor.  Eventually he hung-up on me.
