Ethernet Connection Dropping At Night

I've had Internet Air running for several days with excellent results. I connected our personal network and backup drive behind a firewall in a router to the gateway via 1GB yellow ethernet. In the morning, the ethernet connection has dropped and resumes when unplugging and plugging the cable into the gateway. I've gone back and forth between 1GB and 10GB ports with the same results. I'm assuming that, after a while of little or no activity, the gateway is dropping the connection to the router. This puzzles me because I know some of our devices are active to some degree during the night. Any thoughts?
