We want to help, @2decadecustomer!

What email domain are you trying to use in Outlook 2003?

If you're using an AT&T email domain (att.net, bellsouth.net, sbcglobal.net, etc.), please use smtp.mail.att.net for your smtp server with port 465 for the outbound port and SSL checked. You can verify your settings by using the Troubleshoot and Resolve tool.

AT&T and Yahoo are separate email services now, so if you're having trouble with a Yahoo email account, we recommend reaching out to them directly.

We hope this helps.

@ATTHelp Thank You for the suggestion...

The email is @att.net, but it used smtp.mail.yahoo.com for the outbound mail server for many many years. It is from when att and Yahoo were "connected". unfortunately, because I am no longer a current att customer, tech support is less then helpful and the automated phone system is useless unless you have a current account number.

I have tried the different att smtp server names and ports(465 587 25) with and without ssl and/or spa and just tried the one You suggested to make sure.

The answer I get is the same. no response, check ports & settings.

Or, mailbox unavailable...

The part that bothers me is I sent an email on 4/1/20, the next day, it stopped sending, but I still receive email sent to that email account.

I had not changed any settings or updated anything on the computer. That tells me it was something server side. But, other mail clients like mail from win10 work, Gmail or apple mail on mobile devices works.

But since history and all previous email is on this box/client, I am reluctant to change if I do not have too.

I tried deleting and creating a new 16 character secure mail key.

I tried the command line command suggested on some of the help sites, regsvr32.exe inetcomm.dll

No joy.

OK, we see you're still having this problem. Have you tried checking your IMAP settings?

Please check your Imap settings and let us know if they're correct. Looking forward to your reply.

It has always been a pop account, and yes, the settings are correct.

There are two other @att.net accounts that also stopped sending, they are all pop accounts and the other 2 no settings were changed.

And they still receive emails too, just won't send...

I just find it hard to believe it is client side.

The two responses I get are below, one for the test email function and the other when I try to send a regular email:

"Send test email message: The specified server was found, but there was no response from the server. Please verify that the port and SSL information is correct. To access these settings close this dialog, then click More Settings and click on the advanced tab."

"450 Requested mail action not taken: mailbox unavailable"

Not sure why the system is asking me to "accept as a solution" when it still won't send an email...

smtp.mail.yahoo.com which is what it has been since the beginning.

I appreciate the suggestions, but I am guessing it is the old version of outlook/OS doesn't get along with the email server software any more.

and they really want people to use oauth

I have tried inbound.att.net and outbound.att.net also for in and out, no joy

I have an open window smtp.mail.yahoo.com that I cannot change the server name. It won't delete, it won't edit. Where do you find the place to edit the POP3 amd SMTP servers. And how do I change to an IMAP server? Thanks!

We're here to help, @evanjva1!

Can you clarify with us what device you are using that shows this to you, and what you are using to view your e-mail? Also, what domain do you currently have set as your e-mail? (Yahoo, AT&T, SBCglobal, etc)

Let us know. We look forward to hearing back from you!

I have a similar problem.   I have 4 "bellsouth.net" accounts and use outlook 2003 on a windows 10 computer to send/receive emails.   Just yesterday, one of the accounts stopped working.  It gave me an error message saying I was forbidden from retaining a copy of the email on the server.  Changed the email setting removing the check to retain copy of emails on server.   Then it downloaded my emails.   But when I checked later that day, it stopped working completely and would not accept (or retain) the password.   A message popped up saying:  Please type your user name and password.  The box to save this password in your password list was unchecked.   I checked it, pressed OK and the box popped up again.  I went online and to try to log in to my account and got some sort of error message.   Continued to try to log in but it blocked me after too many attempts.   So I followed prompts to reset password, got into the online account....then revised my outlook profile to use the new password.  It does not work.   I have deleted the outlook account profile and recreated it using the same settings from the other 3 accounts that are working and new password, but still get the pop up with the unchecked password.   I have tested it and it appears to send fine but get the error message:

Task 'inbound.att.net - Receiving' report error (0x800CC92):  Your email server rejected your login.  Verify your user name and password in your account properties.   Under Tools, click Email accounts.  The Server responded : -ERR{SYS/TEMP} Server error - Please try again later.

I, too, am a 20+ year ATT customer who recently moved to another internet provider and ATT will not help me fix this problem.      They claim it is a software issue.  It is obviously not the case.

I had the same thing happen back in April on my  old XP computers that I merely used for emails.  I was an ATT customer at that time, but they still refused to help me resolve this issue.     That is why I moved to another provider, but am left having to deal with ATT because I do not want to lose my old email addresses.

I work remotely all the time and had email from Outlook 365 forwarding to my Win 10 PC using ATT Yahoo Mail until the Spring 2020 from not only my work & clients' domains, but a Government email address ( usac.org), which sends time sensitive action items that I must respond to or lose grant funding.

As of 10/8/2020,  the ONLY email that forwarded to my ATT Yahoo email is from work's outsourced IT organization yesterday. I agree that I have used the smtp info mail.yahoo.com and prior to that att.yahoo.com in setting up forwarding from that Outlook account.

The Outsourced IT organization can see that the emails have forwarded to AT&T's server in all cases. Since Spring the only email I received was on 10/8/2020 from the outside IT tech's email.

He asked if AT&T could be blocking emails from usac.org and vincentbaltimore.org . I have the same problem receiving forwarded emails from mothersetonacademy.org.

On 10/2/2020, regarding my Mother Seton Academy email forward rejection, I received this explanation of a Mail Undeliverable Subsystem from this email address:

[email scrubbed]

"The original message was received at Fri, 2 Oct 2020 16:51:02 -0400

from mail.mothersetonacademy.org [173.10.170.114]

----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----

<[email scrubbed]>

(reason: 554 5.7.9 Message not accepted for policy reasons. See https://postmaster.verizonmedia.com/error-codes)

----- Transcript of session follows -----

... while talking to mx-sbc.mail.am0.yahoodns.net.:

>>> DATA

<<< 554 5.7.9 Message not accepted for policy reasons. See https://postmaster.verizonmedia.com/error-codes

554 5.0.0 Service unavailable  "

I looked up that error code and that is not reasonable.

I use Verizon FIOS as my Internet provider because AT&T isn't in Maryland.

This is their answer:

WHAT ARE 5XX (553 AND 554) PERMANENT ERRORS?

  • A 553 or 554 SMTP error indicates an email could not be delivered due to a permanent problem. Message delivery can be permanently deferred because :
    • Spamhaus has your domain or IP address listed on a Block List.
    • You're trying to send a message to an invalid email address.
    • Your message failed authentication checks against your sending domain's DMARC or DKIM policy.
    • The message contains characteristics that Verizon Media won't accept for policy reasons.
    • Other suspicious behavior which leads Verizon Media to issue a permanent rejection for your SMTP connection.
  • If you consistently receive 5xx errors when sending to Verizon Media, we encourage you to review our Sender Best Practices, since 5xx errors can be a symptom of a more widespread, general problem.
  • You should not retry sending an email that comes back with with a 5xx error. List managers should have a policy for removing email addresses that generate 5xx errors/bounces

The school checked Spamhaus and they are not blocked. Do you know any reason Verizon would reject AT&T's SMYP address? My email is a valid email address. None of the reasons makes sense and I covered this with Verizon FIOS tech support. They can't help.

Since this happened this Spring, is there any COVID 19 related actions that AT&T and/or Yahoo have taken to block forwarding?

Is there anyway a Tech answering this email can LOOK at my email to see if something is being blocked coming through the AT&T Yahoo servers from those addresses and to me?

I am a retired employee and like the others a 20+ year ATT Customer. I don't want to change my email platform mainly because I LIKE the way this email is set up. It is more easily used in my opinion than my GMail account which I only use when I have to for ICloud and family "surprises".

This forwarding issue is costing me and my new business clients’ time and money. They are risking losing Federal funding on the grant work I do because email is time sensitive.

The problem is broad based impacting what all versions of Outlook users.

Let's work on this email trouble, @30plusyruserandretiree

Just to clarify, is the issue with other emails forwarding to AT&T or AT&T forwarding to another email? We'll address both...

We have updated our security with our emails. We no longer have the ability to auto-forward emails as they arrive. We are also using OAuth and Secure Mail Keys with clients such as Outlook.

As for receiving forwarded emails, businesses and government emails have the highest likelihood of being on our block list. You can contact us or learn more about it on our Postmaster Page.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any other questions!

Dear Raychel,

This is about receiving forwarded emails from schools and the FCC to be precise some of which are coming from Outlook email servers.

I am reading all email on Currently.att.com.
Would AT&T block USAC.org which is an arm of the FCC as well as elementary and high school emails? I looked on both links you sent to see what else I could learn and use to no avail.
I am not using an app because I am reading email on Currently from AT&T. I don't use Outlook or an app on my PC.

I also didn't see anything helpful stating which US Federal Government agency is being blocked. This is coming from USAC under the FCC.

Can you offer any other help?

Thanks for the quick reply and clarification, @30plusyruserandretiree

We don't have a list of the senders on our block list but it may be worth a try to email our postmaster and double-check. That email is meant for the senders but they should be able to help you as well if you're able to provide the sender's email. You'll want to click on the contact us link under the "Support and info for Postmasters" heading.

Hi Raychel,

Due to work and other needs I didn't get to sending the Postmaster the request for help checking the Blocked email list immediately nor follow up reading the auto reply that was generated.

The email address I have for Postmaster was [email scrubbed].

This is the Mail Undeliverable notice generated by the Postmaster link you provided. Can you offer any further help? Is there a toll free number call center for help?
