internet usage suddenly increased dramatically around 11/20/22
I have internet 50 now and have had ATT internet for many years. I never used more than 400-600 gb per period. Usually less than 400. Around 11 /20/22 that suddenly spiked and I went from using 3-20 per day to 30-100 per day. Now over 1600 for December. I open and look at usage and today, the 31st, I used 20 gb before I got out of bed and turned anything on. I noticed another person had similar experience around same date. No changes in devices or usage. I reset router on 12/27/22 and now there is no data usage shown for that date. Something is messed up and I do not believe the data numbers.

We'd be happy to help you understand how your internet usage is calculated, rdw1956.
You can use the following reference to help you find out how your data usage works.
Data usage is also determined by the downloads received and by your uploads you have sent. This applies no matter how you access the internet from your home network.
Please reach back out if you need any additional assistance.
Thank you for choosing AT&T Community Forums.

I encourage you to join THIS thread and add any data you have that shows your issue. I'm hoping that when everybody at AT&T is back from holiday/vacation next week we'll have enough people to show it's not just some fluky situation on our end but something that's gone wrong at their end.

I have the same issue, started in December, went from 550 Gb month to over 2100! Am trending to over 2100 already for current month. Changed to new router by Att but no change. Att wants me to upgrade to unlimited for added $30/mo. I will start to look for another provider

Same issue. 11/20 started showing 3x my normal use. Multi calls to the IT team have gone no where. I'll continue calling.

I have experienced the same issue. Something fishy is going on. My usage graph was flat until November and has now $piked 300% in December and January.

Update. I actually have internet 75 and my usage has always been very low, almost unbelievably low. I started monitoring it daily, and noticed they must use GMT for time because evening data shows up on the next day. I checked data usage in fire tv app and it says I used loads of data also. I have been able to keep it below 50 per day by only using one tv at a time, although weekends it goes higher. Netflix uses tons whenever I watch it, so I have turned down picture quality. Something did change in late November, as usage increased dramatically, but I am afraid it is correct now, and was not previously. I had months as low as 82 gb last 8 months, 312, 378, 82, 404,159, 163, 802, 1793. Should not have to throttle just to watch tv. Only one user.

I have had this exact same problem. I called customer service and was giving the usual excuse of ‘it’s you, not us’. So, I’ve made it a point to monitor my usage closely, shutting off Wifi at night, and not letting the streaming apps run when I’m not truly paying attention. I’ve bought no new equipment, and watch the same streaming apps on SD if possible. The net decrease after 2 months is negligible. Something changed at AT&T during the month of November and they aren’t talking. Imagine the increased revenue from so many Internet 50 customers paying overage charges. It’s almost as if they are forcing us to switch to fiber. Imagine that.

If only that were true, @KatK . I'm sure there are many, many people on capped plans that would kill to have the opportunity to switch to fiber (super fast, probably cheaper, more reliable) but fiber is not available to them. Sorta silly to tick those people off for that reason and not be able to give them fiber.

@tonydi My comments were in no way meant to insult anyone who doesn’t have access to fiber. Why take it personally when we’re all reporting issues with a sudden spiked usage on Internet50/75 accounts. This isn’t a forum about human feelings, it’s about internet service and AT&T. Focus on the subject at hand.

I never saw anything close to an insult. I'm just saying that the conspiracy theory that this is all a ploy doesn't hold water because it will never play out the way you suggest.
And it's not just 50/75 accounts. Plenty are on uncapped fiber and have the same issue, which also trashes that theory.
And in case you hadn't noticed, I'm the one here focused on the task by trying to get this issue pushed up the line internally at AT&T. Please read my first post in this thread and go to the other thread and add your story to the growing list. Report when it began, how much higher the data numbers are for you compared to prior to that date and anything else you feel is significant. AT&T is monitoring that thread.
We need NUMBERS, the more people that report this, the more ammo we have that it's not some fluke and not something where all of us suddenly began consuming massive amounts of bandwidth around the same date.
