Internet outage for the week? My kids have homework!
Got a call from a neighbor wondering if our phone was working because no one else on the block seemed to have phone service. Sure enough, our phone was out and so was our DSL. Chating on-ine through the mobile phone ap (not an enjoyable experience but that's another story), the report back to me is that service might be restored by Friday night. And when should my kids get their homework done? Just about every thing I read about "the outage" says I shouldn't have an outage. But we do and there is no reasonable repair estimate.
Working with our multiple ATT phone hot spots doesn't work real well as someone would have to give up their phone to do this. I would have to reprogram all sorts of wireless devices in the house such a printers, computers, etc What I need is FREE USE of a hot spot device for the week. Does anyone out there care to help me with that?

When all was said and done, the outage was due to a fire on someones storage shed. The shed was positioned under the overhead wires and the fire melted the cable. One can understand how difficult it was to get a patch for that.
The hum was the same that I have experinenced almost yearly since I moved in 20+ years ago. It is unrelated to the original issue. I explained to the situation to yet another new technician that came to see us. The guy said it had been years since he worked on POTS ( he works on fiber) but he understood what I said... Mainly... Someone has a problem, the techs fix their problem and someone elses line gets messed up. Then when that one gets fixed, it breaks someone else, ad nausium. So he went to every box until he found the wires causing the issue and cut them off. Apparently, the wires are so old the insulation is starting to crack and if wiggled just wrong, they cause a short and therefore the hum. He cut them off short in the box so they are out of the way of any other activity there. Makes me a bit nervous but so far, so good.
The interesting thing is that we are a high end neighborhood in a very urban area with phone service almost 50 years old. A newer neighborhood just up the street just had fiber to the house installed. Other older neighborhoods get fiber strung on poles like we have but none for us apparently. We still have the minimum DSL possible and based on my conversations with "the office of the President" I'm lucky to have that!
