DNS errors when using AT&T provisioned DNS

When I use automatic DNS address assignment, I am unable to browse.

I see this error in Edge; “DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET" Firefox shows a similar error. Windows troubleshooter confirms the DNS server fails to respond.

However, if on my Win10 computer, I switch to using Google’s DNS servers, (8.8.8.8 and 9.9.9.9) my domain name requests resolve as I expect immediately after reconfiguration. For the curious you can find more information about using Google’s DNS servers here.

The DHCP server is an AT&T-provided router. Using automatic DHCP, my home router IS the DNS address. Here are my DHCP automatically-provided DNS configurations:

IPv4 DNS: 192.168.1.254

IPv6 DNS Servers: 2600:1700:721:3171::1, 2600:1700:721:3170::1

Now what?

I just had to update my daughter’s newly joined device’s IPv4 and IPv6 Wi-Fi network adapters to Google’s DNS servers before she could successfully use her device.

A little help here, please?

Updating my iPhone 6s device by manually adding DNS servers renders this message:

Privacy Warning

This network is blocking encrypted DNS traffic.

The names of websites and other servers your device accesses on this network may be monitored and recorded by other devices on the network.

Anyone there? @ATTHelp?

Hey, @Screenack, we're happy to look into this for you!

If you haven't already, try resetting your router.

Also check to see if you get the DNS server error on your mobile device. iOS 14 has enabled encrypted DNS.

If you weren't aware, Firefox has added DNS leak security features that can be turned off and on. Follow these steps:

General > Network Settings > Click the Settings button. Scroll down to Enable DNS over HTTPS.

Something else that has helped other customers with this issue is forgetting the network.
Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Find your network name and choose Forget This Network. Then rejoin the network.

Let us know how everything went!

Dear @ATTHelp

Thank you for responding, but did you read the entire thread? The first question, and two subsequent comments, are tied together. Please start from the beginning for a better understanding of my question.

As for “Resetting” the router, there’s a number of reset options which I haven’t tried. I have repeatedly rebooted the router, but I’m more than willing to reset the appropriate option. Each has a different time-sunk cost, so I will appreciate your specific recommendation.

Please let me know which one you mean.

Thank you for your attention.

Hi @Screenack

It shouldn't take more than either a normal reset, that you have already tried, or a factory default reset.

However, before you factory reset your router, this can commonly be resolved by running through the troubleshooting on the Smart Home Manager. You can use your AT&T credentials and either a mobile device or a computer.

If you try both of these and are still having issues, let us know what modem you are using and if you have any additional routers or wi-fi extenders in the house.

We look forward to helping you resolve this!

Yes, I’m familiar with the Smart Home Manager. However, since I’ve manually configured DNS for my iPhone, the SMH has been unable to reliably connect to my router, currently both the iOS app, and your web application are throwing a 500 connection error. That said, I don’t recall a troubleshooting function, only a scrollable list of suggestions.

We have one modem, the AT&T U-verse Pace 5268AC Gateway Internet Wireless Modem. We have recently added an “AT&T Smart Wi-Fi Extender," which I configured following the manual’s instructions. That is the extent of our home network hardware.

Hey @Screenack

Were you able to reset or factory reset your modem? If not, that is still going to be our first recommendation.

From there, if it's still not resolved, you do have the option of sticking with the Google DNS or if you're comfortable you can try searching by IP and using a tracert or traceroute depending on your device to see if we can narrow down or locate the issue.

We appreciate your patience!

I’ve performed the factory reset. I then disabled manual DNS configuration on my devices, and so far it appears to be working as I expect.

The SMH wants to restore my WiFi settings, but given the previous trouble, I’m not sure this is a good idea?

Thanks for checking back, @Screenack

We're happy to hear the factory reset seems to have resolved the issue!

We would agree, it may be best to set up any settings again instead of restoring.

If you have any other questions, let us know!
