asked to cancel the service but is charged an extra month fee

My internet service contract expired June 23 and I called before hand to schedule a cancellation.
Then I got service from another internet service provider and believe ATT can handle this correctly. However, I never receive a notification on how to return the device, and I called ATT again today. Then I was told my service is not cancelled because I did not call again before June 23 to confirm a termination date, and I need to pay for another full month, $60.
It is not a lot of money but I really do not like the way how ATT treats their customers. Just a friend reminder for other users, please please check with ATT a couple of times to make sure your request has been confirmed from their side.
I also submitted a complaint to FTC and hope there will be a regulation on service termination.
