Upgrade from uverse to fiber - automatic and/or mandatory?

I'm a current ATT vdsl2 subscriber.  Fiber upgrade began in March and will hopefully be available soon.

Will I be contacted by ATT to upgrade?  Will it be required as I've heard they're getting away from copper? Will I be able to make the change on my existing account (ie not have to create a new one)?

My only other question no one can answer (when will it be fiber be active & available) lol

You might get door hangers or sales people going door to door when it’s available or you may not. Don’t order service through door to door people. You may get contacted by att to get a free upgrade. Free meaning no cost for you to switch. Your bill will go up.

Whether you are forced to upgrade is hard to say. My state will not let att force people to fiber.

Nobody outside a select few know when or where fiber will go. Check the availability site weekly. As a current customer don’t upgrade online or with a phone reps at first. Call and speak to the loyalty group. They may be able to offer some discounts for switching. Pricing has been pretty strict lately so typically no yearly deals like in the past. Shouldn’t need to change accounts if service stays under the same name.

Hi LeroySparks, we're happy to address your inquiry about upgrading to Fiber.

As browndk26 mentioned, you might be contacted to upgrade, but that's not a guarantee. The best option is to check our website for Fiber availability. We don't have a schedule for when Fiber will be ready, nor do we know what areas will receive it, so checking online is recommended.

If you have any other questions, let us know!

Will you be contacted after fiber or just before fiber is available,  I would expect so... likely several times / methods.

You may upgrade existing account as long as it is a Uverse platform (1T data cap). For legacy DSL  customers they would need to create a new account.

Forced, yes and no... while you do bnb it have to switch. ATT will not continue supporting the copper service after fiber is an option. Therefore any future repair needed including replacing the gateway after lighting strike will require upgrading to fiber.

You may schedule an upgrade at your convenience after availability or wait till have a service issue when your installation will occur at ATT convenience (you wait without service till installation can occur).

Just my thoughts...

On the check availability page, fiber is available as of today (I've been checking daily, lol) for me.  The good news is that 1Gig service will be $1 per month cheaper than my current 50 Mbps service.

Apparently when upgrading it must be done via phone rather on the internet.
