Sign up for Internet Service with New Account without Running Hard Credit Check

I would like to sign up for Internet 1000 home service but I do not want AT&T to run a hard credit check on my account. I have excellent credit and am willing to show proof of that.

The first agent I chatted with online said a hard check would not be done, however after reviewing these forums I found that a hard check is, in fact, done and my credit score would be affected and told him so. He then suggested I speak with Billing and provided a phone number. I called the number and a representive indicated there are no other options other than allowing AT&T to run a hard check.

Why can AT&T not allow for pre-payment, deposit, or alternate proof of credit prior to opening an account for internet service?
