Moving service to address with existing att box

Att will not move my service to a home I purchased because there is an account still at this address. I do not know who was in this home prior to me owning it. It is a house and I am the only person living there. Why can't att cancel the existing service that is probably unpaid?

Only the account holder can cancel service. I know you want to blame At&t but the fcc sets the rules.

As @Constructive shared above AT&T can't just cancel a valid AT&T account at an address.

Your specific challenge is one that a special group should be able to work with you to resolve. The Office of the President.

Here is the link for a form for you to fill out, please provide both an email address and a phone number where you can be reached.

I understand the guidelines but why can't att see an unpaid balance at a property that I own and cancel it? I've been with att for over 6 years and have no way of knowing who previous tenant was or who the account was for. Why keep an account open that's not getting paid over having mine here that will be paid? It'll be a shame to have to go to Comcast because att can't help me figure this out.

This rule exists due to several reasons, such as roommates or significant others cancelling accounts out of pique.

There is still an att fiber optic box in the house. Can I hook up to it and have internet access until the account is canceled? I would not have to pay mine until then.

No you can't just plug into the existing ONT and have service. How long have you lived there and do you have any idea when the previous residents left?

Someone at AT&T will have to research this further so I would suggest you try the following link to complete a form that will go to a special group that should be able to assist you with this specific situation.

Your topic should be U-verse.

Same problem I am facing here, I want to change it to my new address but someone already has an account. I have asked the previous owner to change your subscription hope so this will help.

This is a year old thread you should probably start your own since very few will see it here
