How to get high speed internet in the 21st century

I recently bought a house that is in a rural area 2.7 miles from a bigger city.  I am in a neighborhood with many houses.  I can see the ATT & T wireless fixed internet tower from my house.  The only thing I can get is a hot spot or 768 kbps basic service.  I NEED high speed internet.  I am in graduate school and work on my computer all the time.

Fiber is 2.7 miles away.

What can I do to help the situation and get internet to my area?  The area I moved to is less rural than from where I moved from and I had great high speed internet.
