Why no fiber in Daly City?

I am moving next month and leased a home in Daly City 94015 - one block away from SF coast side  - and did not even think of checking if there was Fiber in the area - assuming the whole Bay Area is pretty much covered at this point!? But nope, no fiber service, and no bars at all for AT&T cell service, and of course I am 100% WFH. So T-Mobile and Xfinity pretty much only choices. How is this even possible?

Your original assumption was pretty far off.  😁  There's a good amount of coverage, but it's nowhere near across the board.  You can go HERE and click the map to initialize it and then input your location.  Here's what it shows for that zip....

What's the highest speed plan AT&T offers your location.  That's probably the best indicator of what your fiber future looks like and even then it's a crap shoot.

Thanks for the Map, it is crazy how scattered it is. House is in Westlake - just North of John Daly Blvd and West of the freeway - in that grey patch.

The highest and only one they offer is 50Mbps - major downgrade from 1GB with smart home tech, multi-streaming, gaming, wfh and online classes.

The map is only a ballpark since it's derived from govt and AT&T data and updated a few times a year.  The best (still not perfect) source is to look at AT&T's availability page.  You can input addresses near you and try and narrow it down to exactly where fiber stops, but sometimes knowing that it's the next block over or even across the street from you makes you feel even worse.

50Mbps means part of the circuit is fiber, then copper the rest of the way.  So there's some hope of fiber at some point in the future, maybe.   😉

The exact schedule (and the twisted logic for where it goes) is closely held and never something the public or even most AT&T employees will have access to.
