Switch from Sonic to att self install

Hi im switching from sonic, which uses the at and t network to to at and t fiber.  I already have a ont box.  At and t called and said the new box they are sending (self install) wont work as we already have active service at the address.  I have to cancel sonic for the box to work.  Sonic ends on june 4th can I cancel and install the box on june 4th?   my service for at and t is starting on may 26th.  At and t said call may 26 to cancel sonic and they will right away automatically be notified and the box will work.  Is this true?,

I don't want to get stuck without internet.  The billing is starting for at and t may 26th......whats the best way to make sure my router will activate with at and t when I install it? What is the way to have the box work on may 26th I don't really need to wait till the 4th as at and t will charge me anyways I think on the 26th.  Basically what issues with activation will I deal with, should I tell sonic to cancel the same day the 26th, or should I cancel at the end of billing cycle on the 4th?  What's the way to do this that my box will activate on the 26th?  Thanks.

Not familiar with Sonic terms if they will cancel in the middle of a billing cycle... ATT will not. Service stays active till end of billing cycle regardless if using the service.

Normally ATT as ILEC will not activate new service until CLEC has cancelled. This generally means several days of no service between cancel and activation..

I would recommend ordering cable service, once installed cancel sonic, then 30 days later order ATT Fiber. Anything else be prepared to use your phone as a hotspot if desire internet.

Per ATT Terms Of Service, Customer Self Install (CSI) billing starts on day scheduled even if do not have equipment, or equipment not set up. When having a Full Tech Install (FTI) with $99 installation, billing starts on the day the gateway is registered in the system, working service.

May wish to cancel the self install and schedule the FTI  after June 4th if concerned about one week of billing ($10?).

Just my thoughts...

Thank you.  Could I cancel Sonic and their service will end on june 4th, then activate router they sent on june 4th even though it says billing starts on may 26th?   The sonic rep did tell me they can cut service the same day and not wait till the end of the billing cycle, will this make my router at ant router activate on the 26th?  IS there a delay between when I cancel sonic and when at and t can activate router?  Thanks again. is there any way to avoid days of no service with this order?

You have a somewhat special case. Since Sonic uses all AT&T Equipment from your address all the way to the AT&T network there should be no long outage or even the need to swap to the new box you get from AT&T.

Your Sonic Gateway will work on AT&T since it is actually working on AT&T right now even though you are paying a reseller Sonic. I would wait until 5/26 and you receive the AT&T Gateway and verify that it has an activation date of 5/26.

Once you verify this information, cancel your Sonic service and you don't even need to swap the Gateway. Consider your new gateway as a backup unit.

If you want to install the new Gateway because it is a newer model then install it at the time the instructions tell you to. Normally on a self-install they give you a specific time when the gateway will work like after 12 PM for example.

@bingbaloo - How this this end up working out in the end? Any pro tips?

I ask as I'm just now starting the exact same process of moving from Sonic-over-ATT to straight ATT.

@autodog

What Gateway do you currently have from Sonic and do you have an stand alone ONT?

If you don't know what an ONT is see the pictures at the bottom of this post. We just need to know if you have an ONT or just a AT&T Branded Fiber wall outlet.

If you are only switching to AT&T 1000 you might receive a BGW210-700 which requires and stand alone ONT. This is due to the supply shortages.

@dave006

I have a standalone ONT + BGW210 that is currently providing my Sonic (over ATT) service. I also have a new BGW210 that ATT shipped me as part of the self-install package for my new fiber 300M service.

Given that I already have the physical infra already in place & functional I'm not so worried about hardware. I'm more concerned about the switchover time from Sonic to ATT and what that might look like, i.e. is this a same-day cutover or am I looking at days of downtime in transition?

Perhaps @bingbaloo has some direct experience to share?

After many hours and several days with tech support, ATT was unable to upgrade my Sonic-over-ATT fiber service to ATT fiber 300. In the end ATT gave up and cancelled my order.

I'm now Verizon 5G home internet customer. Ordered gear one day, received it the next. 10 mins after opening the box service was up and running with 200+Mbps. Done.
