How AT&T installers run fiber to my house from the street

If source of fiber lines ( AT&T rep calls it matrix box) is buried in my street, how does the installer bring the fiber line to my house? Do they dig a trench in my front yard lawn?

The specifics vary depending on where you live. The basics are that AT&T has installed multiple Fiber lines from the near by Central Office (CO) to a device know as the Primary Flexibility Point. (PFP).

Each service address that AT&T plans to service in this Fiber service area has a port reserved. The PFP varies in size depending on how many customers they plan to serve: 232,, 244, 432, 864.

From the PFP the Fiber loop runs through the street, along the curbs or behind the service addresses depending where the utility easement is located. The Fiber loop has multiple Fiber terminals installed along the way and are usually near 2,4,6 addresses.

From the Fiber terminal when you order service an AT&T rep will run a new Fiber drop from there to your address. It may be buried in a conduit under the ground, directly buried along the utility easement or run overhead in areas that have overhead utilities.

If you have underground utilities, there should be a green box in the ground in your yard or a neighbors yard. Underground conduit runs from it to a larger inground box with fiber equipment in it. Fiber would be pulled from the large box to the box in your yard and then to your house. The wire from the green box to your house will be laid on the ground and buried later. By machine or hand about 6 inches deep.

Thank you dave006 and browndk26 for the posts. I'm in an old neighborhood and all houses in my street get our power, phone and cable/data lines overhead from the utility pole. That'll be probably less hassle if AT&T will run the fiber line from the pole also. But when I asked the AT&T store rep if they'll run the fiber line from the pole he said fiber lines are underground so they won't be running anything from the utility pole. Is he right?

No the Retail Sales reps don't have anything to do with fiber and AT&T will use existing utilities for of you have overhead now then if you are offered fiber it will all be installed overhead from the nearest pole to your house.

An aerial installation is also faster and takes less public services planning. They may install the PFP box on the ground or even on a pole and all the fiber terminals will be mounted near poles and marked with and Orange tag with a number from the install map.

With overhead lines, the fiber will be run through the air like electrical or cable/telco lines. Attach to your home below the roof line, continue down the side of the house to where it will enter the home through an outside wall. Where it enters the home would be up to you and the installer based on where you want the gateway and where the aerial wiring woukd connect to the house.

All this is if you are even eligible for fiber service.

Thanks again dave006 and browndk26 for the posts. I already confirmed with the AT&T rep that my address has fiber available and installation is already scheduled; but she couldn't tell me if the line will be overhead or from underground, only that the installers will sort that out. That'll be great if they'll just run it overhead like my existing Spectrum line.

I had an animal dig up and chew through the cable about 6 feet from where the cable enters the house to connect to the internal fiber box.  Can that be spliced or does a new cable need to be run all the way from the street?   (Edited per community guidelines) armadillos…..

My father told me that they will run off of telephone lines that will be run through the house....is that true? I can't imagine that they would do this in this day and age....
