Downtown doesn’t have fiber but outlying areas do

I would love to have fiber available at my address here in downtown of my city. It is odd to me it is available in the outlying neighborhoods, but not available here in downtown proper. My address is closer to the big 4 story center the next town over, than the other neighborhoods are. I am currently stuck with cable and it has been down for multiple hours 4 days out of the past week. There are many who would pay the lower price for the fiber and have faster speeds for less.

If your downtown, likely serviced directly from the CO (Centeal Office) on ADSL2+ circuit with best speed of 18 or less depending on copper loop length.

To have direct fiber FTTP need to be serviced by a PFP not the CO. In our downtown area there is fiber to the MDU (multi dwelling units) of apartments / condos that have been completely wired for fiber but single family homes are not fiber… still IP-CO.

Most all fiber is a mile or further from the downtown area in my city with a large percentage being near the 2 colleges, (4) high schools, and government offices such as city hall and police. New construction since 2015 is all fiber in my area plus many other larger MDUs of 100 to 600 units.

Other zip codes may be different, the most fiber I am aware of in SE Wisconsin is West Allis where Milwaukee Brewer stadium is located and about 60% of all addresses are rental properties. Small city lots of 50 feet by 120 ft with Alleyways. All aerial (poles).

That’s what also doesn’t make sense. I live right next to the high school and public library. So I would like to believe there would be a greater need for speed here. Also the Fire Dept and Crime lab is in my neighborhood. Go figure!

We're here to shed light on your service availability, @Mjrmlfnkshn!

There are many reasons as to why fiber may not be available such as:

  1. Distance – AT&T Internet is a distance-dependent service. If you are too far away from the equipment, certain services may not be available. This means your neighbor may have service but your home cannot.
  2. Equipment is not available – To get service, AT&T Internet equipment has to be in the area. In some instances, it isn't. As above, this could mean a neighbor may have it but service was not expanded to your home. We do not have information if or when it will be. If you have 1 Gig Fiber and want to upgrade to 5 Gig, please be patient with us we work to expand that footprint.
  3. The area is not built for AT&T Internet/ Fiber – some areas are not internet ready. The Community team does not have information if or when it will be since installation is factor dependent as mentioned at the top of the page. Distance and equipment can also play a factor in instances like this.
  4. Another competitor services the area - This happens from time to time but it does not mean all services are not available to you. Check out other internet options below!
  5. For some internet services, what is offered during the point of sale is an estimate. Most of the time, what is offered will be installed. To determine if service is available, our techs will perform tests beforehand and let you know of any issues.

With that being said, you should fill out our form online to request an Address Resarch to happen. This will have us look into your address further to determine if service may be avialable and if not, when if applicable.

Don't hesitate to reach back out if you ever need our assistance again. Thank you for choosing the AT&T Community Forums!

Government facilities like schools, police departments, etc. typically have dedicated business fiber runs. They don’t share service like residential fiber service does.
