[Widespread Issue in Redwood City] Glitchy connection on router, works fine on VPN

Same issue encounter as in this post and this post

Only time the internet is stable and works consistently is when I am on VPN.

Speedtest.net test couldn’t run and gave a ‘socket error’ message

Lot of requests just get stalled.

+1, also in Redwood City and TLS connections just hang after a client hello:

Hi there, @mhazinsk. We understand that you are getting some errors when you are loading websites. We can help you with that.

A couple of questions before we begin troubleshooting.

  1. Are you having this concern outside a VPN, but not inside the VPN? The reason why we ask, so we can troubleshoot you properly.
  2. What troublshooting have you already done? When it comes to troubleshooting, the first step is resolve anything is the factory reset the router. Just a warning. Any custom progamming that was done, ie. Port Forwarding or static ips will need to be set up again after the factory reset.

Here are the steps:

  • Press and hold the gateway Reset button for at least 15 seconds. If you let go before 15 seconds, the gateway will reboot, but it won’t reset.
  • Wait until the gateway restarts and all the status lights are lit.
  • See if the Broadband or Service status lights are solid green. If so, the reset worked.

After factory resetting the router, if the connection is still unstable, please let us know, because there is much more that we can do.

Thank you for contacting the AT&T Community Forums.

Hi @ATTHelp , I haven't tried using a VPN, but I'm also seeing TCP retransmits when I SSH tunnel.

I've attempted a reset and connecting via both ethernet and wifi and the connection is still unusable. I called the phone support number and they agreed to send me a replacement modem, but I'm not optimistic this will solve anything given the majority of posts on this forum in the past two days are reporting similar symptoms in the same metro area.

(btw, another report from reddit in the bay area with similar symptoms: https://www.reddit.com/r/ATTFiber/comments/xzxto0/upload_speed_01_mbps_constant_time_outs/ )

Other debugging I tried:

* Traceroute with MTR (see output above) - everything appears stable

* Lowering my MTU from 1500 to 1400 - no change

* Loading non-TLS webpages - haven't been able to repro this issue there

Here's what happens when I run curl continuously - note ~40% of the time the connection times out after 60 seconds: https://pastebin.com/Vfn05Cxc

Hi there @mhazinsk, we understand that you are also experiencing internet connection issues in your area as well.

We appreciate the troubleshooting steps you have already tried. We recommend that you allow your new replacement modem to arrive, so it can help narrow down what is going on with your internet connection.

Please reach back out, and let us know if the replacement modem helps.

Hi @ATTHelp, I'm happy to try a replacement modem, but I'm told that won't be delivered until sometime tomorrow (apparently they don't stock these at any customer service center in the Bay Area?!) and this is actively blocking me.

Given the number of reports in this forum over the weekend specific to Redwood City, this seems like a broken piece of equipment on AT&T's side. Can you escalate this to a network engineer in the meantime?

@mhazinsk   First off, I know the correct pronunciation of Linux and that's getting close to the edge of my knowledge of the OS.  😁  But I do have a Mint VM that I play with from time to time so since we're in the same general area (107-218-152-1.lightspeed.sntcca.sbcglobal.net [107.218.152.1]) I just fired that up and ran your commands.

As far as I can tell, they all seem to produce normal results, no errors and nothing out of the ordinary happening here.

Is your issue intermittent?

@tonydi I've noticed this issue constantly since Saturday, though the frequency of timeouts does seem to fluctuate a bit (earlier I recall getting closer to ~20% timeouts at the same endpoint).

I am having the same issue - posted in another thread. Also in redwood city. If I go on VPN everything works, if I use the ATT Gateway without a tunnel, same set of timeouts. Doesn't seem to happen when I load an HTTP only site like http://httpforever.com/

Hard to see how the gateway can be the same issue for multiple people in the same city in the same timeframe - my issues started on Saturday as well.

Hi there. I am also in Redwood City and since Friday evening we have the same issues. All devices on the network have intermittent internet connectivity. I plugged in my PC directly into the AT&T router, ran the internal tests, but those all passed. However when I ran the speed-test on the router, it showed the same as on my PC: Most times it timed out with an error, and only sometimes it would work and pass with the expected 930~950MB/s down 500~800MB/s up. Especially the upload test timed out often.  All our PCs are wired directly into the router, we do not rely on WIFI.

Seems like a local Redwood City is, many people on Nextdoor complain about the same.
