Well, Steam downloads are so variable as to be worthless as a benchmark.  Plus they measure in MBps, not Mbps like your speedtest results. So 6MBps as reported by Steam is about 50Mbps.

Which speed tier do you have on fiber?

What do you get for wired speeds if you run the speedtest in the gateway?

And finally, what do you get if you download a large file like a Windows ISO from Microsoft or something else big from someone with a large broadband pipe?

@tonydi

By default they show in MBps. But STEAM > SETTINGS > DOWNLOADS and you can check the box to show in bits per second. That is what I have done since my internet tier like most is listed as Mbps, so MBps is not useful.

@tboaz09

Does it show 6MBps or 6Mbps (Big B or little b?).

Also check to see if you have the option checked to limit bandwidth and if so what the number in the box is (same place as the option above). I had to do this on one computer or the user kills the internet when all games update at the same time (or he downloads a new massive one).

We're here to assist with your download speeds, @tboaz09!

Thank you ACEs for your awesome help!

Just as @Juniper mentioned, performing the steps provided with change it from MBps to Mbps. If after making the change, the download speed is lower than it normally is, we first recommend performing a reboot of your gateway.

You can do so with these steps:

  1. Unplug the power cord from the back of your gateway or modem. If you have:
    • An internal battery backup, remove it
    • DSL, unplug the phone cord from your modem or gateway
  2. Wait 20 seconds.
  3. Put the internal battery back in if you have one.
  4. Plug the power cord back in. If you have DSL service, reconnect the phone cord.
  5. Wait up to 10 minutes for the gateway or modem to restart and your Broadband light to turn solid green.

Let us know if this helps!

At least Steam is better at giving M options. Some others still use Kbps for some silly reason without even an option to show in Mbps. I understand there are some outreach areas with slow DSL or still on the rare dail-up, but Mbps should be the standard for all programs with Kbps or summarzing to MBps being optional.
