Separating 2.4ghz and 5ghz for smart home devices.

I’m starting to build my smart home arsenal, and I’m wanting to know if I can somehow put them on 2.4ghz and keep my phone and Apple TV on 5ghz and still have them be able to communicate. I have the provided router combo that came with my fiber service. I’m not very knowledgeable so anything helps!

Yes, either combined or separate, the wifi and wired devices are all on the same network and should communicate without issue.

Here's how to separate the bands if you weren't sure...

Go to http://192.168.1.254/cgi-bin/wconfig.ha.  Enter the Access Code from the label on the gateway when prompted.

In the 5GHz section change the Network Name (SSID) to something else.  I usually suggest just adding a -5 onto the end of the current name.  Scroll down and hit Save.  Oh, ignore the dire warnings about the end of civilization if you change the name.

After this, any devices that work better on 5GHz will need to be told to connect to the new SSID you just made but the exiting 2.4 devices should just keep working.
