Phone connects wirelessly to wifi extender but then is unable to connect to main gateway box when I'm close to the gateway

I successfully paired my AT&T wifi extender and it shows up as online in Smart Home Manager.  When I turn on wireless on my Samsung phone and I'm near the extender, the phone is able to connect wirelessly to the extender.  However, when I then move away from the extender and am close to my gateway, my phone attempts to connect wirelessly to the gateway and when it does it fails when a message "Failed to obtain a IP address."

I then walk back to close to the extender, and it's ok again.  The only way I can get my phone to connect wirelessly through the gateway is by restarting the extender.  I have had to do the restart of the wifi extender multiple times, and I can't imagine that this is "normal".  I've also restarted the gateway multiple times.  I haven't yet figured out the pattern that will avoid the IP address failures.

We are here to help with your Wi-Fi, @zrabbit.

We recommend that you reboot your gateway, because this will refresh the network and extender.

After this we suggest that you follow these steps:

  • Forget the network on your phone, which will refresh the device
  • Connect your phone back to your network, this should fix the IP address concern.

Let us know if this helps.

Tried your suggestions and they don't help.  Easier to just disable and reenable wifi on phone.  Doing that seems to allow phone to pick up correct ip address.  Would be nice if phone could do that on it's own, but faster than having to restart gateway, which takes minutes!

Hi, @.

How far away is your gateway from the extender?

We recommend that you factory reset your gateway, because this will restore it back to your default settings.

The extender is about 40 feet from the gateway.  Smart Home Manager also shows a strong signal around the extender.

If I do a factory reset, will the wifi name and password on the gateway revert back to the original ones that are labelled on the gateway box?

If you perform a factory reset, the name of the Wi-Fi and the password will revert to the original information listed on your gateway box.
