New Customer - Peer to Peer games getting huge lag spikes

Hi, I am a new fiber customer and the games I used to play such as Vermintide and Deep Rock Galactic are suffering massive ping spikes and are unplayable anytime I join another persons game.  I have opened the ports both in my windows firewall and my gateway.   This happens 100% of the time immediately upon joining a game. I did not have this issue and I am considering swapping back to my old internet if it is not resolved as I cannot play with my friends anymore.

WHen I check the ports I have set up in the NAT settings on yougetsignal they still show as closed.

Details

Gateway: BGW210-700

Firmware: 3.20.5

No other devices between my PC and the Gateway. It is connected via lan cable. I have had this service about a week.

I have also attempted to disable most firewall functions, I have set Google DNS, I have turned off IPV6.  Please help. I am very close to canceling this service.

Hello @MihrS, we will be happy to help with the lag you have been experiencing when gaming.

Since you mentioned this happens only when you join games to play with friends. There is a chance that it's one of more servers between you, and the game server that's causing it.

We also recommend doing a factory reset for your gateway. That usually does clears up any trouble that may be present.  Just a heads up, doing one will reset any custom settings or IP addresses you may have. Below are the steps on how to:

  • Press and hold the gateway Reset button for at least 10 seconds. If you let go before 10 seconds, the gateway will reboot, but it won’t reset.
  • Wait until the gateway restarts and all the status lights are lit.
  • See if the Broadband or Service status lights are solid green. If so, the reset worked.

Please let us know if you see any changes.

Nope, factory reset did not fix the connection or the port forwarding issue.

When you test using "yougetsignal", do you have the game software running?  If not, the request to open the port to your application will fail and the "yougetsignal" service can't tell the difference between that and the port forwarding not being open.

Did you ensure that the correct protocol (UDP vs TCP) was set for each port, and the correct ports for your platform (i.e. the PC or Steam ports if running on a Windows PC)?

Then it should be working.  The last suggestions I can offer is:

1) that you could set up your PC as the IP Passthrough host and remove port forwarding.  This would expose your PC to all unsolicited requests from the Public Internet, meaning you'd be relying on your Windows Firewall and any hardening you've done to protect your PC.

2) That you acquire a router and configure it as the IP Passthrough host and move the port forwarding setup from the Gateway to your router.  This is how I am configured.

#2 is preferred, but requires you to purchase a router.

Passthrough also did not work. I guess I have no choice but to buy extra equipment. I am learning a lesson about being baited into new services by deals I guess.  Should have stuck with Frontier.

I do not see how IP Passthrough could not work, assuming it was properly set up (it sometimes takes a while for the client to get the public IP address and for the activity to start working correctly).  Still, it's good to have passthrough to a router that isn't "free."

If passthrough worked, I wouldnt have posted this thread in the first place as I had tried that prior to the factory reset. It's extremely frustrating to have my internet just lose a chunk of its functionality because AT&T's gateway does not function as it is supposed to.  I have a router on the way but this entire thing has left a bad taste in my mouth.  I haven't encountered an issue like this in the last decade across multiple ISP's.

Please describe what "did not work" means, with specific issues.  I'm assuming that you checked that IP Passthrough setup was complete, including that your router got the Public IP as its WAN address.

Setting up your own router can often provide better control and stability over your network compared to using the default ISP-provided equipment. Hopefully, once your new router arrives and is properly configured, you'll be able to enjoy a more seamless and reliable internet experience.

If you continue to encounter issues even after setting up your new router, you might consider reaching out to AT&T's customer support for further assistance. Sometimes, they can provide insights or even perform remote diagnostics to help identify and resolve the problem.
