My Gateway spontaneously reset itself to factory defaults in the middle of the night!

My BGW210-700 gateway spontaneously  itself reset to factory SSID and password in the middle of the night!? No power failure had occurred

Woke up to find all my hard-wired and Wi-Fi devices had lost connection.

Fired up my AT&T Smart Home Manager phone app to find  the gateway SSID and password were set to factory defaults! I changed those back to what I had set them to, and everything seems to be working.

After 45 minutes of calling multiple 8nn phone numbers, fighting my way through the inane AT&T voice-bot, and support "techs" with accents over very poor quality connections that I couldn't  understand clearly, and who didn't understand what happened, I finally got an English speaker on good quality connection who verified the spontaneous reset. AT&T is sending me a new gateway.

How and why did this happen? Anyone else experience this?

You wouldn't happen to have noted if you have received a new firmware version?  While firmware upgrades shouldn't cause this, I'd find it more likely that it happened as a result of that than spontaneously deciding to wipe NVRAM for no reason at all.

And in case you're wondering, the only way to back up / restore the parameters is bounce them off paper (or screenshots saved on your computer), i.e. manual reentry.

No firmware update .. still on 2.6.4 ... I understand that 2.7.7 is in the wild.

Yeah unlike a real router you can't save configurations. I may have to dump the AT&T router and go back to passing through to my own router, I hadn't done that because it had been working well and 5.2 coverage in my 3000 sq ft house is great. I also have AT&T wireless cable boxes that work very well and get a strong signal

not sure why your wasting time calling customer service they wont be able to see or know why your modem reset itself. they cant login to your modem plus theres nothing for them to see if they could. i agree with @JefferMC most likely a firmware update.

AT&T support can and did log into my gateway to confirm the factory reset. That's what the supervisor told me.  Are suggesting the guy lied?

I would suggest that they often have no idea what you, or they, are talking about.  It could be that it reset itself due to a failed attempt at a firmware update.

Noting an identical experience: My BGW210 reverted to the factory WiFi SSID and password during the night last night (2020-08-07).  It's running version 2.7.7 now but I'm not sure if that's new.  It's on a UPS--no power interruption.

I'm going to assume that it was just an unannounced firmware push unless it starts happening with increasing frequency.

We would be happy to help you with your gateway rebooting issue @LineChaser!

It is possible the reset was from a firmware update, however if this is a continuous issue we have some info you can take a look at to see if you can resolve it through self care. Check out our page on AT&T Modems Randomly Resetting for more info on how to resolve that.

Please let us know if this helps resolve the issue!

My Arris BGW210-700 has reset to defaults for no reason 5x.... and this last time was a new unit that I had ATT send me in order to solve this issue.

ATT can't fix it, it's a problem with the Arris BGW210-700 gateways that they are just ignoring because most people just use the default settings anyway.

Well, I'm not most people, and I'm very gd tired of setting up 20+ static IP addresses and Port Forwards for 3 Xbox consoles, FTP, SFTP, RDP, VPN, Torrents, Plex Media Server, etc....

Best bet is to buy another router that isn't garbage.... leave the Arris BGW210-700 set to defaults, disable wifi, and then enable IP passthrough to the second router and do all of your routing, NAT, and WiFi on that device. Sure, the Arris BGW210-700 will inevitably reset to defaults again, but you will just have to enable IP passthrough and disable the WiFi instead of setting the whole stupid thing back up.

It should only do that when you deliberately factory reset it, or if it fails a firmware update.  I've not had any issues with mine losing its settings, but I would only have to set up IP Passthrough and turn off Wi-Fi if it did.

This is a three year old thread, by the way.

My Arris BGW210-700 literally reset itself to factory defaults while I was sitting on my sofa watching Ted Lasso on Apple TV last night at 2am, and that was the 5th time that I've had it happen over 2 different units.

It may be a 3 year old thread, but it's the first result on Google Search for "Arris BGW210-700 randomly resets to factory default settings" and I figured it could use an update for all the other people seeking answers.. 👍

You do seem to have a habit of that. :)

Same issue here, and it's now happening on the replacement modem that I got because of this exact problem. Is there any way to disable automatic firmware updates?

The firmware update causes the problems. It happened to me when they pushed 4.22.5  My wifi speeds dropped way down from 600-700 Mbps to 80-100.

You'll need to factory reset but write down your configuration first because you'll need to reenter it. This happened to me and a factory reset was the fix. It's been fine now no more problems for a couple of months and they've since pushed 4.23.4 and I didn't experience any issues.  The AT&T tech support is worthless. I had to figure this out by trial and error.

@A_T_T_ux good luck, my new BGW320 has just randomly reset to factory defaults on June 6th, 9 days ago. At that point I'd only had the router 41 days, it was a replacement for my old BGW210 that randomly factory reset 2x, which was also a replacement of my first BGW210 that had randomly factory reset 3x.
