How to return ATT ONT if I have no account number

I never had an ATT account, but I have an ATT ONT that I got through another ISP (Sonic). Since I can't provide an ATT account number, can I still drop off the ONT via FedEx/UPS? It's a perfectly good ONT, and I hate to see it turned into eWaste.

Hi there, @Sunfish33. We understand that you would like to return an AT&T ONT provided by another ISP. We can provide the details.

Normally, the ONT becomes a fixed structure to the home, so another resident can use the same service. There is no need to return it. However, if you would like to return the ONT you can contact Sonic, and they will have ways to either send a tech to come remove the ONT from the home, or they can provide a way to return it, since it was provided by them.

If you have any other questions, please let us know.

Thanks, Matthew. Even though I was a Sonic customer at the time (and still am), it was AT&T who provided the fiber drop and installed the ONT inside my house. I had Sonic remove it when I switched over to their fiber. I already asked Sonic if I could return the ONT to them, but they referred me to AT&T since it’s your equipment and they don’t use or install them.

So, back to my original question, can I take this to FedEx, or is there some other way for me to return it to AT&T?

I think you're going to run into a lot of confused FedEx or UPS people if you try and return it.  They'll need your AT&T account number to create the return paperwork but since you don't have one I think that's going to stop them cold.

I suppose you could try and talk them into just dumping it into the big box of other equipment going back without any paperwork but who knows how that will play.

Or maybe dump it in your car and the next time you see an AT&T field tech at his truck see if he'll take it.

You're going to go through a lot of effort to keep something out of the eWaste system so I applaud your effort.  Most would just dump it in the trash and be done with it.  👍

Well that is a very good question, @Sunfish33.

First, thanks for coming back to us. We do appreciate it.

Since we do not have an account with you, we do not have a way for you to return the device. As you have stated, AT&T provided the fiber and the ONT, which is normal, when an AT&T customer gets fiber.

So you can either keep the equipment or you can discard it. If you discard it, you may want to contact your city to see what their policy is on discarding or recycling electronics.

Thank you for contacting the AT&T Community Forums.

If you are not expecting anything in return, you can always leave it at an AT&T store.
