Higher ping than usual for a game I play
Hello,
I play a game. The game server is located in Chicago and I live in Indianapolis. My ping has been 15 ever since I got the ATT fiber service(about 1 year). For the past few days, it has been 60 very consistently. I spent 2 hours with multiple support members trying to figure out the issue. I play on a PC that is directly connected to my router via Ethernet.
Steps I have taken:
1. Powercycled both router and modem.
2. Fully reset router(Orbi)

These are the traceroutes my computer is taking to the game server IP (192.64.170.1). I am wondering why hop7 always times out and if that is the issue for the ping increase. Thanks for any help
Edit: Sorry if this is the wrong place to post, ATT support person suggested I post here.

It's hard to say for sure but often times servers are set to not respond to UDP requests which is what tracert uses. So the server could be functioning perfectly and yet you'll get these timeout "errors". Or, it could actually be struggling and is the cause of your issue.
Regardless, the place where the ping times jump is not part of AT&T's network so they can't/won't do anything about it. And good luck getting whoever owns those servers to respond to mere mortals like you and I.
Years ago I had issues similar to this and even though I'm on the West Coast, and they had a server about 50 miles from my home, I would log into servers in the MidWest because they had lower pings than the one here. Maybe that's a possibility for you too.

Hey
Thanks for responding, I read a day or 2 after that a lot of players were experiencing high ping. It's actually down to 14 now like normal even in winmtr. So I guess I should have waited a week maybe before contacting support/forums.

Oh good. Yeah, if it's a game that a lot of people play then someone usually notices and gets some action. Waiting a day or two is often the best course of action so that all the screaming can reach a high enough level.
