Gateway Fails to connect to PS5

Hello, I have ATT Fiber with the Nokia BGW320-505 gateway and have been struggling to get it to connect to my PS5 for months. I have done the custom NAT gaming set up and that makes it work intermittently, but I normally have to restart the 5 GHz multiple times to get it to connect. Is there something I am missing or can do to keep this from happening? It is very frustrating that I have to constantly restart my network to get it to work, and even then it will drop while playing games.

We understand how frustrating frequent disconnects can be, @xChrisw. Let's see what we can do to keep your PS5 connected for you.

When it comes to resolving an intermittent Wi-Fi connection, there are several troubleshooting steps we recommend taking to get this problem resolved. If you haven't done so already, we recommend you try the following:

  • Modem Environment- For the best internet experience, the modem should be at least 3-4 feet away from electronics. Electronics, like speakers, can emit interference that can slow down speeds and decrease Wi-Fi range. They can even cause service drops. Learn what you can do to improve the modem environment to get the most out of your service.
  • Restart your gateway- Often times, problems with the gateway can be resolved with a simple restart. We recommend restarting your gateway to see if that improves your overall experience.
  • Power- If your gateway isn't getting the right power, it can often cause intermittent drops and affect your overall internet performance. To make sure you're getting enough power, we advise that you double check all the cables connected to your gateway and that you ensure your gateway is connected directly into a wall socket, as surge protectors and power strips can sometimes fail to deliver what's needed.

If the troubleshooting steps above didn't resolve your problem, then there's a few additional questions we'd like to ask.

  1. How far away is the PS5 from the gateway? based on the information provided in your post, it sounds like you have your PS5 connected exclusively to the 5.0GHz band. While the 5.0GHz band does offer superior speed and connectivity in comparison to the 2.4GHz band, the trade-off is that the range isn't as great. You may want to try moving the modem closer to your PS5 and see if that improves your connection.
  2. Do any other devices in your home experience intermittent connectivity? If the intermittent connection you're experiencing is limited strictly to your PS5, it may be possible that the PS5 itself is the culprit and you may want to consider looking into that with the manufacturer if this is the case.
  3. Are you able to set up an ethernet cable connection to your PS5? A great way to bypass the problems that a Wi-Fi connection can sometimes present is to simply hardwire your devices into the gateway. An ethernet connection will generally always provide superior connectivity and speed as opposed to a Wi-Fi connection.

Let us know how these steps work for you, and we look forward to hearing back from you!

Yes sorry I should’ve specified, but the issue isn’t connecting to the wifi initially, it’s that the NAT type will Fail until I manually restart the 5GHz radio. The actual connection to the wifi is no issue at all.

With the NAT type failing, I cannot play any multiplayer games. Thanks for your reply though.

Thanks for clarifying that for us, xChrisw!

If the troubleshooting options that we provided don't help, we recommend that you set up Port Forwarding to improve the connection between your gateway and console. You can check PlayStation's website to see which ports need to be opened. You can follow the steps for the BGW210 on your 320.

Let us know if you need further assistance!

So I have set up port forwarding and that does work, but it’s not consistent. Meaning I need to restart my 5GHz radio before it will connect. Is there a setting I’m missing to try and get this connection to not be so intermittent. The signal is good and the port forwarding works ok, but my concern is just trying to be able to turn on the PlayStation and have it connect with the correct NAT type without me having to restart the 5GHz  radio. Sometimes I have to restart it 3 or 4 times to get it to connect properly.

Thanks for clarifying that for us, @xChrisw!

We suggest that you perform a Factory Reset on your gateway. This can help refresh your connection and possibly alleviate anything that's causing you to restart it multiple times. To do this manually, follow these steps:

  • Locate the small red button & pinhole on the lower rear of the gateway
  • Depress for ~15 seconds

WARNINGThis will return all gateway settings to a default state. Any custom Wi-Fi passwords, Wi-Fi names, SSID, Static IP, and Port Forwarding rules will be lost. Settings can be restored, scroll to accepted solutions in the article above for steps to restore settings.

Please let us know if this helps!
