bgw320-505 Find best 5 GHz channel - does not work

I have had At&t fiber for 5 months now and have been having issues with 5ghz for a while. Have been calling support but no help. Finally, I figured it out. The issue is for some reason my devices do not work if 5ghz channel is anything less than 50.

i.e. at channel 36 my phone says cant get ip  or speed is 8 mbps

When I restart the gateway it works fine because the channel is set to 56 or 60. After few hours it goes back to 36 or 40. I have tried finding the best channel 'button' from the phone app and the browser, does not move from 36 at all unless I restart the gateway or just restart the 5ghz wifi.

Any idea's ?

We're here to help with your Wi-Fi connection, @I_Am_here!

Have you logged into your gateway interface and changed the bandwidth of the 5 GHz channel? If not, you can access the interface by following steps one through five under the section titled "Update Wi-Fi info from a device connected to your network"

Once there you should see a section titled 5 GHz Wi-Fi Configuration. Locate the bandwidth field and if it is set at 80 MHz change it to 40 MHz. The reason for this change is on the 80 MHz channel there are not enough non-overlapping channels for you to operate within, therefore causing more congestion.

Let us know if you need help performing this!

Yes, have tried changing the bandwidth already since can't change channels.

So, just went to 40 MHz on 5GHz and best channel is agiain 40.

Laptop connected at 574/574.

And no matter how many times I try find best channel it's 40.

Have you tried doing a factory reset (holding down the Reset button for >15 seconds)?  That seems to be a popular fix for a number of the oddities the AT&T gateways possess.

Standard Disclosure.....be aware that if you've done any customization on the settings (SSID name change, passwords, port forwarding, etc) all of those will go away on a reset so make note of the changes beforehand.

Of course the real fix is to put a proper third party router behind the BGW using IP Passthrough and disabling the wifi on the BGW to avoid conflicts.

So this is my second Gateway, after doing all troubleshooting, resets, thought maybe Gateway was bad.

So, with first Gateway same brand, I did it pass through, with top of the line, google mesh system. Behavior was same, worked for a while and then kept disconnecting. So returned mesh system, changed Gateway and now I have it split between 2.4 and 5 so at least I can fall back on 2.4 if having 5ghz issues. Also no issues with cable either just 5ghz. My guess is it interferes with my neighbors (multiple wifi around me) but not sure.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I would suggest that the Wi-Fi feature of most AT&T Gateways is somewhat... er... lacking.  A third party access point or router would probably help you with some of your issues, though it may create others.

I messed that you already tried a Mesh system and found it wanting.  Not sure what to tell you.

Thanks for the additional info.  If you do get to the point of wanting to rip your hair out, maybe try a different mesh system.  I'm not seeing a lot of success stories with the Google product when paired with the AT&T gateway.

Thanks for the suggestion.

So at this point, the only solution with at&t Gateway I have come up with is, if I could manually set channel to 56, 60 or 65. They work fine!!!

Strange thing is restarting Gateway and/or restarting 5ghz does the same thing but after a few hours Gateway defaults to 36 or 48 and won't budge.

I don't have the tact that @JefferMC has.  I refer to all of the AT&T gateways as dumpster fires (I used to use more colorful terms until the word filter on the forum stopped me).  Then again, I don't know of any major ISP that provides gateways that work as well as third party units.

@I_Am_here , there's one thing that confuses me about your posts:  You seem to be hitting the "find best channel" button and accepting it's selection.  Couldn't you just put in the channel number you want?

That's the original question, where can I set it manually? I do not see a option, it's set to only automatically.

I remember it used to be a drop down. But not anymore.

Ahhhh!  I thought you were setting a channel and the gateway was changing it back.

You got sucked into the lousy UI flaw where the Advanced Options LINK looks like an underline for that header.
