AT&T Wifi 1GB - Streaming Buffering

I am new to AT&T having just moved to a new apartment. I have 1Gb internet and I get 600mb up and down on Wifi from my laptop and phone from the same room as both TVs. My TVs have horrible buffering though. Every 2-3 minutes the stream will buffer for 2-5 seconds or the quality of the stream will downgrade significantly.

I have reviewed multiple articles on this site. I have turned off Auto configuration of the ethernet ports, turned off IPv6, minimized the firewalls, and it is still terrible!

Having previously been on Google Fibre this is a whole new issue for me so would appreciate any further suggestions on how to prevent this so I can actually watch TV :)

I fixed it by changing 5G to 40Mhz. Not had any buffeting since. I hope that’s helpful to someone else!

Go into the Wi-Fi settings of the gateway and try changing the 2.4 channel to a different one. You probably are getting WiFi interference from being in an apartment.

Ethernet ports have no effect on WiFi. If you can connect the TV’s via Ethernet cables that would eliminate the buffering.

Hi @samueljames87,thank you for reaching out to us. We're glad to help you improve your steaming experience.

Is your equipment plugged into a surge protector or an outlet?

We recommend that you plug your equipment into an outlet, because surge protectors can cause a lot of problems.

They can cause:

  • Slow wired speeds
  • Loss of service
  • Modem resets

Please check out our article on Troubleshooting and Tips for Streaming Apps. We suggest the following options from section 2:

  • If connecting wireless, there are several things that can be done to improve the signal, such as:
    • Changing the Wireless Channel (learn more about changing your Wireless Channel for NVG/Motorola and 2Wire/Pace here).
    • Removing Environmental Interference: Speakers and other electronics can impact speeds.
  • Reducing the number of devices - The more devices connected, the slower speeds can be.
  • Updating your plan - Have extra bandwidth to compensate for X-factors (additional devices, streams requiring more bandwidth).

If you're still having trouble, try section 3:

  • Scan for viruses.
  • Close all programs you are not using.
  • Clear your browser’s cache/cookies.
  • Make sure the Network Adapter is functioning properly (updated drivers).
  • Disable hardware acceleration for older computers/internet devices.
  • Reduce internet device’s memory usage  to have memory available for streaming.
  • Use our Smart Home Manager App to test and optimize your connection.

Let us know how it goes. Please feel free to reach out to us for further assistance.
