AT&T Fiber & EERO

@GeoffS4 - I have been an AT&T Fiber customer for a while. I recently purchased the Eero mesh system in an effort to boost WiFi speeds throughout my home. I have the AT&T BGW210-700 gateway and purchased the Eero Pro + 1 Beacon.

Was the setup process relatively straight forward and what sppeds are you seeing over WiFi with the Eero mesh system?

Does anyone know if I can replace the AT&T router/modem with the Eero system?  If not, and you're stuck with AT&T/passthrough, are you able to manage the network through Eero's apps, rather than the AT&T smarthome app?

No you can't replace the AT&T equipment with the eero system.

There are 2 ways to use an eero system with AT&T, in Passthrough mode or bridge mode(on the eero system).

If you use passthrough mode then you can manage all devices that are connected to the eero system but you can't manage the AT&T Gateway from the eero app. You will have to use the Smart Home Manager app or the web interface on the AT&T Gateway for your internet connection and any devices directly connected to the Gateway.

Note: If you put your eero system in bridge mode then you lose almost all of the eero management tools. Specifically, you'll lose access to the following:

• Family Profiles
• eero Secure
• eero Labs
• Device bandwidth usage details
• Device blocking
• Advanced network settings management through the eero app

As mentioned, with AT&T fiber you are required to use the AT&T supplied gateway, which has poor WiFi reliability. The only way to get around that is to put the gateway in bridge mode or pass through and purchase a better router like a mesh WiFi router.

Thank you!  Do any of you have any feedback on the Eero management tools vs. the AT&T Smarthome?  If I do the work to make AT&T's gateway a passthrough, is it worth it?   I've found the SmartHome App to be cumbersome and unresponsive at best, but I don't have experience with anything else.

Sorry, can't help you there. I do not use AT&T as my ISP. Mine is Comcast and I use my own modem (Motorola DOCSIS 3.1) and router (Netgear Orbi Mesh). Speeds, hard wired and WiFi are fast and reliable.

I am not sure that the average AT&T customer will benefit for the complexity of setting up a secondary router (eero). However is it possible and will work once you get it properly setup. It really comes down to you and what level of complexity do you want vs benefits of any of the different solutions.

I would suggest you start with the basic AT&T Gateway and 1 additional AT&T Smart Wi-Fi Extender ($49) if you have a large home or separate floors. It is a Mesh wireless network just like eero or any of the other solutions like Google or Netgear. Oh and eero is now owned by Amazon.

Routers like eero allow you additional granular abilities manage your network usage by family members (set limits) for example. I don't spend much time with the smartphone apps as it is mostly a set it and forget it for any of them including AT&T Smart Home Manager.

When configured for IP Passthrough (Passthrough Mode) the AT&T provided gateway shares its Dynamic WAN IP address with a single device on the LAN. IP Passthrough is also commonly used as an alternative to using a bridged mode. Find these details and more within the support article linked above. I see a lot of talk about passthrough mode and one LAN device.  I have a Fiber Router and eeros but am also going to hook up the router to my structered wiring to activate all my jacks.  If I put the router in passthrough to utilize the eero mesh, do I affect using the router for the wired jacks?  Thanks

No in your specific example your router would be the 1 device in passthrough mode and an eero device(s) would connect behind your router in most cases just like any other Ethernet device.

Just a reminder the eero can't control your router or AT&T Gateway.
